Artificial Intelligence Will Save Humanity, but Does Anyone Care?

On Earth and in space, from battling climate change to finding new colonies, A.I. is humankind’s best friend.
Human activity will almost certainly push global temperatures more than 2 degrees beyond pre-industrial levels. Even with aggressive action, some climate scientists are already suggesting it may be too late to reverse course. While there’s plenty of uncertainty in climate science, there’s no good reason to assume anything other than the worst possible outcome. And there’s a lot more certainty in human behavior. We’re short-sighted, fight-or-flight–driven animals. The threat of climate change is too slow, too distant, for the human brain to meaningfully react to it in the here and now.

Climate scientists will keep running studies and modeling solutions that could reduce carbon dioxide levels more aggressively. And we should do that. But even with the most optimistic science out there, we will likely end up with catastrophic consequences on the ground, including widespread war, famine and an onslaught of disease. We need a backup plan like never before.

Pediatricians say your kids should decide for themselves who gets a hug
The holidays provide families lots of encounters with distant relatives – and lots of opportunities for grandparents, aunts and uncles to demand physical affection from – or inflict it on – kids. Letting that slide teaches kids the wrong lesson about who has rights to their bodies, doctors say, and there are plenty of other ways children can choose to express their affection or respect for their elders.

Kids have different levels of comfort and shyness in these social situations and benefit from being given wide leeway in how to react, officials say.

never used to be such/so much crap....just accepted things, rought them/us up,and everyone got on with life

When Kids Get Sick, Could It Raise Their Risk Of Mental Illness?
New research from Denmark adds fuel to an intriguing theory: Could the inflammation from infection be a cause of mental illness?

As NPR's Rhitu Chatterjee reports, researchers studied medical records of 1.1 million Danish children, and found a link between a wide variety of infections, including common ones like bronchitis, and a higher risk of many mental illnesses.

The risk for getting a mental disorder was the highest within the first three months following an infection.

The link has been found in other research too but the mechanism underlying it is still not fully understood. One theory is that infections contribute to mental illness by activating the body's own inflammatory response.

Read on to learn more about this theory -- and what parents should keep in mind when their kids get sick.

The Daily Good
Move over, Emily and Ethan — some of 2018's top names for dogs include Cardi B, Gambino and Groot.

Elise Simon/NPR
The most popular dog names of 2018 say a lot about our world and what we're watching. Pups named Harry and Meghan were both up this year, as were names of music idols, including Freddie Mercury and Cardi B. Plenty of pups were named after sci-fi characters and superheroes, with names pulled from Guardians of the Galaxy, Rogue One, Wonder Woman and Black Panther. “Bad guy” names were popular, too. The name Pennywise went up 500 percent. Other popular villain names included Loki, Bane and Anakin.

Fit seniors can have hearts that look 30 years younger.
Why develop an exercise habit now? Because 75-year-olds who have been doing it for decades may have the cardiovascular systems of people in their 40s and the muscles of 20-somethings, researchers found.
