_avg_ did not say it is OK for a guy to hit a girl if the girl hits first. I don't know if he was alluding to some suggestion he'd heard that the couple were hitting each other but he most definitely did not say it was OK for a guy to hit a girl.

There is no double standard because there is a difference. The difference is your average man can stop your average woman from beating them. Your average woman cannot stop your average man from beating them.

You see now that is not right and not fair and that is EXACTLY why a lot of men who are physically abused by women don't go to seek help - because they feel they will be ridiculed for not being able to stop it. Women who abuse their men are playing a power game. The men they beat on are just as victimised and abused as the female victims of domestic violence and no more able to stop it. It is totally unfair to suggest otherwise.

There is no difference - domestic violence is just as bad regardless of whether the man is the aggressor or the victim. Domestic violence in same sex couples is no different either.

Bad? Yes. I'd never argue otherwise. However they are NOT the same and no amount of politicizing will make them the same, not when it comes to physical violence. I don't condone anyone hitting anyone else, but when comparing physical spousal abuse, the two aren't very comparable. There are very few situations where a man CANNOT defend himself where that is the common situation with the woman. Neither are acceptable, but in order for there to be a double standard they have to be the same and they simply are not.
