You mean because he felt inferior and tried to compensate verbally, etc?
I don't presume to know exactly what he was feeling, but based on similar behavior by other former friends that was illuminated by people close to them (and roommates who directly admitted such things), I figure it is something like that, yes.
I used to be vet self conscious about making others feel inferior, but I learned in the Army that people allow themselves to feel as they feel, often regardless of what I or anyone else does.
