Royal Visit

Hairy Black One - it made me laugh that you are so ignorant that you think we still have the divine right of kings - the last two European monarchs who believed that, got some serious head.

Crumpets anyone? Earl Grey and scones for me. M'am?

Those of you before have made your arguments have every right to do so. If my so-called ignorance was a offensive it was a blurt at the idea some of you get all wet over something so... antiquated. That and I didn't have all day to sound more informed but you know what they say about opinions...

I am so glad that the UK has such an extremely competent head of state, she knows her job perfectly, thanks to her decades of experience for that.

We have presidential elections in France at the moment, I'm British so I can't vote but France will have some newbie head of state, who by the time their term in office is over will only just have learnt how things work.

This comparison might help you understand why the British have no desire to become a republic.

Glad to tickle your funny ...bone? It was reading all your reactions to my reaction that was the funny part.
You know, for someone who wondered "Who cares?" you certainly seem to care about it a lot yourself.

Now, I wonder who'll be at Monday's state dinner? A who's who of Hollywood, I hope. I can't wait to watch the arrival ceremony on C-SPAN!

Remind me again just who is supposed to be the queen on this thread.

That Sarkozy fellow makes my skin crawl.

I was being facetious.

I separate the person from the institution. As such she is deserving of the highest respect. My opinion is as simple as that.

I try to do the same. It's a shame (and telling of those that can't) that many here (and elsewhere) are unable to do so. These are the same people who cannot have a heated debate without it descending into a verbal slanging match, i.e. they're unable (or unwilling they'll say) to separate an opinion from the one voicing it. That said, a little well used invective can be fun when used properly!

I am no fan of the Monarchy but it serves a useful and valuable role and while it continues to do so I'll support the institution if not necessarily the Monarch though Elizabeth is so far the only one I've known. Fortunately in this case the two sentiments coincide. Unlike the present PM for example.

Who Cares?!!

I, for one.

I love her and think she has a certain je ne sais quoi. Leave the gal alone. She's a survivor of the first order and were it not for the subjects of her antecedants from her lovely native land you'd not be privy to the lovely language you take for granted.

I second what LordPendragon said.

You mean the President-elect of France (notice I am not french and neither have the results of the second round of voting been announced yet)

Getting back on topic, I was surprised to learn that even though she is an avid racing fan, she has never been to the kentucky derby.

I hope she is going back to london soon, Tony Blair is waiting to see her-resignation in hand.

Seeing the race was probably a greater pleasure than seeing W. squirming and out of sorts in his rented tails is likely to be.:biggrin1:

I would enjoy beng a fly on the wall and watch little George have the "runs" while at the table and try to maintain his composure and clean pants. Of course I am a fan of the Queen and NOT a fan of little George. He reminds of of that other Geroge (George III) who by his foolish actions resulted in the US becoming a free nation.

Now that there is a Commonweath of Nations, is the term British Empire still used in official functions, awards etc. as in The "Whatever" Award of the Realm of the British Empire? Or was the term British Empire an unoffical term like The States or Yankees? Some one who knows fill me in on the transtion from 1945 when the British Empire covered a fourth of the world to now when it is in reality now the United Kingdom a modern nation in Europe.
Well Britain still has it's off-land interests in islands like the Falklands (thanks for the assist by the way!) and millitary presence in Africa and of course, being the only friend of GWB means we invited every Tom, Dick and Ahmed to blow our vastly more vulnerable country apart...

Mind you, although I don't use the term "Sheepie" I am in agreement with The HairyBlackOne in that I dunno how "foreigners" can show such affection to an istitution, especially one that would have all your value leeched towards the Square Mile.

Maybe us "Knee-grows" are just narcisstic?

Just a few facts about the Queen:

The Queen is very intelligent and although she has very limited power over the will of the government, she has been known to make observations or 'suggestions', which at times the government follows. She has guided many prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill. They may leave but she alone endures.

I wish I had a photo of the Queen at the time of her coronation. She was every bit as beautiful as Dianna. She was concidered one of the most beautiful women in the world. At one time the Queen was the wealthiest woman in the world. She still could be. That's not money she gets from the government, that's from wise investments. The Royal family does not own Buckingham Palace or the crown jewels, they're owned by the people of Great Britian. The Royal family is one of the largest properties owners in New York City.

As a Canadian and one of the queen's subjects, I pledge allegence to her. Personally I prefer pledging to a person rather than a thing.

As soon as her uncle David abdicated she started being trained for the job as Queen. One her 21st birthday she she pledge her life to serve the people of the empire/commonwealth. During the war the Queen was trained as a mechanic and I have seen old movies of her driving trucks. The entire family did volunteer work during the war.

The Queen Mom was the most loved royal. Her husband was able to serve as king because of the support he received from his wife. During the war the Queen Mom was concidered by Hitler, to be the most dangerous woman in the world. During the blitz, the Queen Mom while touring the damage in London was asked by the press why she was always dressed to the nines. Her answer was to the effect, "when visiting don't you want to look your best?" When Buck House was bombed the Queen Mum said, "Now we can look the East End in the face." The people loved her very much.

During the 50's the empire was changed to the commonwealth which is still the largest organization of its type in the world. Members of the commonwealth include: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, India, South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many other nations

As an institution the Royal family generates more income for Great Britian than they receive. Under the Queen the number of family members receiving allowances from the government has been drastically reduced. Most of them are now paid by the Queen.

Much of the tradtional protocal is dictated to the Queen. And much of the pomp is why so many of us are attracted to the monarchy.

George III inherited at the age of 18, he had poor political sense, he made bad decisions and insisted on them being followed, but he learned on the job. He was basicly a kind, decent, caring person.
