It may have been used by a US president (sounds like a Jefferson-ism) but sorry to say it's not a US invention. The principle is rooted in Anglo Saxon Europe.

PS - It was used a line in an episode of V for Vendetta.

Ok Mr.Dong..but how much Anglo Saxon Europeans used stuff from Greek thoughts too?

It seems we borrow stuff from one another and some say the same stuff say more beautifully than others to particular ears...but even myself having no idea who said first for sure many had the idea for ages because it just make sense. People in the past hanged their abusive monarcs, at least in France the things were not preatty...I kind of remember bits of Victor Hugo Os Miseraveis...but English history is very foggy to me.

Ps: ? Vendetta episode ? Don't know..but I will try to find the frase Jefferson-ism

Gisella,
V for Vendetta was a short lived movie loosely based on Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up Parliament in the 17th century. Re-set in a fictional fascist future world, where the antihero (Mr. Smith in the Matrix) carries out terror plots against the evil government wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.

Don't look up Jefferson-ism... look up Jeffersonian... that is how his thoughts and ideals are reffered to in the present day. So Os means The and Miseraveis means Miserable... I think I just picked up a little Portuguese!

I always kinda liked Rummy but I think that was mostly because he reminded me so much of my grandfather. I do think it's about time that he resigned, though. Past time, even, but in light of the election I think it was a good move for Bush. I don't know that it will make any tangible difference, though. It seems like it's the same guys in Washington all the time, the just put on different hats and do different jobs. I mean, Cheney and Rumsfeld have been working for Republicans in Washington since, when? The Ford administration? Longer than I've been alive, anyway. and it was reported not long ago that Henry Kissinger is a regular visitor of the White House. Bush himself is part of a political dynasty.

Thank you very much for clarifying everything to me!

Cool, I'm going to check everything...

And you sure learned a bit of Portuguese...

(Ps: Are you at least 60% of Native American or I'm wrong? If so which people or peoples? I guess you are midwest northern ones...Lakota Sioux maybe?)

Oh, lots. Though probably more Roman than Greek influence has survived.

We do, and you're right. That saying is probably as relevant today as when it was first used, whenever and by whoever that was.
