Just an observation; One of the things that I've been doing lately, for a variety of reasons, is smoking cigarettes. Lately, It seems like I've just been sitting in my hotel room, which is more akin to a studio apartment, watching reruns of CSI and Criminal Minds; Chicago White Sox Baseball, (The Cubs suck, always have sucked, and always will suck) and smoking cigarettes.

Yes, I know it's a nasty habit, yes, I know it's bad for me, yes, I know it's expensive, yes, I know people don't like it, but somehow, it seems to fit my mood. I've fucked up my life, and all I have is ashes, so the taste of the cigarettes seems to fit.

BTW, here, in the Northwest Corner of Indiana, Air Pollution Playground, Cigarettes are "only" about $5.00 per pack, which I hear is cheap compared to other places, and certain brands.

/Lately, it's either Basic Light 100's, or Marlboro Special Blend Light 100's.

Just an observation, Don't be sending me no Nastygrams.

Just sharing. Kinda having a love/hate with it. Little shocked about how quickly I've adapted to it. Usually, Unless I'm uber stressed, I don't smoke. Then, a pack would usually last me a week. Lately, I've been killing almost a pack a day.

Hi mate! I can totally relate to you and your habit! I myself have been smoking cigs for more than half my age and I m 30.. so do the math yourself..I should point out anyway that my cigs amount varied a lot during my life and although in the past there have been period of intense smoking ait s only since a year or so that I ve been steadily smoking almost a pa k a day... Also I totally share your thought about how well it fits a dussoluti g life but I think at cigarettes as a satisfactory reward for doing somethi g challengi g and as a cherry on the cake after something nice like sex... Yeah I know its a bit of a cliche but it does fit damn well!!

Try some mint candy or something. Anything other than going backwards.

Ironic choice of words. I don't like smoking. All of my siblings smoke - one or two may have finally given them up at this moment. I've never smoked and don't understand the appeal. I don't lecture aout it though except to my kids. With all that time in your hotel room though, maybe chewing gum and some push-ups would be a better alternative.

Yep, equating smoking with the depression. I have gum, mints, etc. I love my hot cinnamons like cinnamon altoids, 5 Flare Gum, etc, but it's not just the oral fixation, it's the taste. Ashes in my mouth.

/Could be worse, could be Swishers or some other Uber narsty Cigar........

I haven't smoked (as a habit) for about two years. I will occasionally smoke a cigarette while drinking with friends... but I've been missing smoking regularly really bad lately.

Idk what your financial situation is but I know people I'm friends with have had success quiting- if you are ever interested in doing that -by taking up a multitude of hobbies ex: yoga, volleyball, baseball, martial arts, and one guy even builds things(doesn't matter what honestly it keeps him busy). Anywho. I hope things get better for you depression is a horrible thing to live and deal with alone.

Exercise is a good and effective way to relive tension and help cope with emotional problems. A long brisk walk can be very effective.

To help quit smoking (which I've never had to do because I have never been able to stand smoke and have always seen smoking as unreasonable and destructive), many people have put themselves on an exercise program and found that it worked. Consider hiring a personal trainer to get you started. Depending on how unfit you are, you may have to start on a walking program. From there, you can progress, perhaps to running or bicycle riding, and working out in a gym. Improvements to the way you look and feel will provide motivation to continue.

There are also programs to help people quit smoking. One of those, combined with an exercise program, could be very helpful.

My mother spent the last six years of her life on oxygen because of advanced emphysema; she wouldn't stop smoking until she had no choice. So, her last six years were very unpleasant. I've known other people who had to go on oxygen for the same reason. The mother of a friend of mine died of lung cancer caused by smoking; her last days where horrible and her adult children had to watch here suffer.

I quit smoking on 12, April 2011 and I've never felt better in my life, I don't wake up with a hacking cough, my house smells nice, my fingers are not stained with nicotine, I don't have burns in my clothes from falling ashes...
On the flip side I loved smoking. I still have dreams about smoking... especially smoking and drinking and socializing. I met Catherine Deneuve, Brad Pitt and Penny Marshall and a variety of other interesting people smoking outside in LA and NY,
... All that being said I have put away about $5,400.00 in a special bank account by not smoking. Did I mention my breath and hair smell nice too. Most of all I feel great I wish I had quit years ago but I guess I was not ready. I know you are having a difficult time right now but don't use cigarettes as a crutch and considering your current financial situation; can you afford to get sick with a smoking related illness?

I smoke around $125 worth a week - around 25-30 a day. Why haven't I quit yet? Because I like it.

Yes, I know it's bad for me. Yes, I know it costs me way more than I can afford. And I don't care. Because I'm not just addicted to it, I like it. If someone can find me something as fulfilling, I'll replace it. And no, eating lollies, chewing gum, exercise or any of the other 'replacements' don't work.

I smoke because I like it. And when your life sucks (mine doesn't right now, but has at times in the past), it can be the only good thing about your day.

Enjoy your smokes AM, even if you know you have reasons not to do it.

You say you've not addicted to it. To determine for yourself whether you are addicted, try quitting for a couple days and see what happens.

There is no defense for smoking other than you choose to. I'm a smoker and actually started later than most. I grew up around my dad, brothers and sister smoking but I didn't start until later in life.
The idea of hobbies / distractions being the answer is wrong. Unless you want to quit it won't happen. I agree you need to find another outlet but you have to make the choice to quit.
Like every addiction there are different levels of withdrawal that people go through. Some can just walk away from them and that's it. Others have physical reactions (headaches, nervousness, anxiety....) I fall into this category.
Mouse I know what you are saying and hope you the best.

Fuck I want a cig after this. :firedevil:

True, and very unfortunate.

It's also unfortunate that when a smoker's health seriously declines, he is not the only one affected.

Gee I think he knows smoking is bad for him. What do you think? Everybody and their mother knows smoking is bad for you. In any case, people telling you how bad something is/telling you to quit on an online forum isn't likely to make a difference. When I quit smoking with any regularity it was because I made that choice.

You can afford money for cigarettes but can't afford $5 for a library card or food?

Sorry but I just can't find sympathy for you anymore.

Please consider quitting the smoking. The effects that smoking has over the years is detrimental and will make you sick.

Set fitness goals and focus on achieving them. You will make yourself feel much better physically, and the challenge of meeting the goals will provide a feeling of accomplishment. Your appearance will improve and you will become stronger or faster (depending on your goals), and seeing this progress will be good for your mental well being.
