I have heard of this. I didnt know what it was called. But I heard about it under the contex of men having to go to the ER because they hurt themselves.

Like the one guy who put a flower in there to surprise his girlfriend, only to find out that he couldnt take it out because the flower stem had tiny "hairs" that would allow you to go in one way, but snag the other way.

Having had a urinary catheter during surgery once and screaming like a schoolgirl when it was pulled out, I can't relate to the desire to engage in sounding. But as a nurse, I'd warn anyone doing it that the whole procedure should be completely sterile. Otherwise you run the risk of a urinary tract infection. One stat I read said that about 35% of all urinary catheters in men result in UTIs, which can be horribly painful, can cause delerium and altered mental status, and can cause scarring that will haunt you for a lifetime. So make sure your equipment has been sterilized, and don't touch anything that's going into your urethra with your bare hands. Wear sterile gloves if you can get your hands on them. I swear my dick hurts just looking at pix of sounding.
