When someone appears to be presenting themselves as “queer” but are also very private and low-key concerning their love life, sexuality and doesn’t embrace a public identity, it’s impossible to determine their dimensions. It’s impossible to determine someone’s dimensions even if they do present all those things. While not everything is about sexual behaviors or sexual lifestyle. “Sexuality” is so varied and features so many different aspects and potential fluidity and contradictions. And the gender, sexual, romantic, affection, emotional investment, commitment spectrum is wide. Then there’s of course, prejudice, internal phobias, family, religion, male insecurities, money, ego, persona, sociology that drives many people. All of this stuff can make it difficult for someone to speak freely and straightforwardly to the public, especially if you are more of a “private” person. The best we can say is that he’s handsome and talented and probably in the queer spectrum.
I also feels like he’s the type of “hippie” artist who gets caught up in “sensitivity”, “open-mindedness”, liking ambiguity and wanting “queer appeal” but is ultimately almost completely heterosexual and “straight”. So, once again, it’s impossible to say the dimensions of someone’s sexuality, what someone’s lifestyle, preferences, motivations, struggles are or where someone is in the gender, sexual, affection, emotional investment, commitment spectrum. Especially when they’re fairly private and low-key and not in the spotlight.
this is not how sufjan reads to me at all. he probably does not like names and signifiers so he's probably hard to pin down but there is nothing "Straight" about this boy. he reads as queer in every possible way and probably slept w men and women
Almost half of the entertainment industry is probably in the “queer spectrum” and have slept with a lot of different types of people and/or have different types of attractions (and yes, that includes many of the “gay” identifying public figures as well as the few who actually flat-out say that they’re “straight”). So, even if he has “slept with men and women”, that doesn’t tell us a ton about his lifestyle, sexual dimensions, his preferences, his identities, his relationships, where he is in the gender, sexual, affection, romantic, emotional investment, commitment spectrum.
He has been so low-key and has avoided directly talking about any of this stuff and we don’t know anything about his private life or relationships. We barely know anything about him at all. And no, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s an “almost heterosexual” who is very “straight”-leaning when it comes to the overall spectrum but likes being “sensitive” and “queer friendly”. I’m not saying that’s who he is, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Either way, there’s just not enough there to say much of anything or even speculate all that much. And try not to whittle sexuality, orientation, love, etc. down to who people sleep with, especially when you don’t even know who they “sleep with”.

At least as of circa 2019, Sufjan Stevens had a long-term male partner. No idea his relationship history with women.
It is what it is, and he has never publicly commented on his specific definition of his own sexuality, but I think it very safe to assume that he considers himself a member of the LGBT community for a variety of reasons. Including the obvious one (see my first sentence. Lol).
