Part 1
I hand my suitcase over to the taxi driver and get in the back while I turn my cell phone on. It takes a while but it starts to vibrate and I receive some text messages. A couple are from friends who want to have drinks with me, one from my brother who asks if he can borrow my car and one from my girl Kate (short for Catherine) who asks to let her know when I've landed. I don't return any messages but switch my phone to stand-by and give the driver the directions and put my headphones.
After two minutes, I send a text to Matthew, telling him that I'll be there in 15 minutes. I don't know if I should put any X's at the end of the text. I type one X, but not in capital.
Finally I arrive at the gate of the villa and I fold my coat over my arm when I take my suitcase from the driver and I overtip him. He smiles thankfully but I don't smile back. It's hot and the sun is burning and my sunglasses are somewhere in my suitcase. I wait for the taxi to be out of sight until I press the intercom button.
Nobody answers, but the gate automatically opens and I walk to the front door of the mansion. I hear the sound of water sprinklers in the garden.
There's a red sports car on the driveway, a Porsche. The top is down and I've never seen it before. Matthew's mom probably bought another one. Or maybe it's his sister's and she left it here.
He knows that I'm waiting for him outside the front door, as he just opened the gate for me, but Matthew lets me wait for a minute or so and then opens the door.
"My man Brian!" Matthew says and he's wearing a beige silk bathrobe. I drop my bag on the floor and we hug each other and he puts his left hand on my lower back. Matthew still smells the same, he always does.
He turns around and fastens his bathrobe and I follow him further into the villa.
"You must be starving, right?" he asks and turns around. "I ordered some food just a couple of minutes ago. It's still hot if you want some."
I'm starving so I accept the invitation and together we eat the Chinese food Matthew ordered. We talk about all kinds of things, little things. About the new furniture in the house and how we're doing in school and about the girls we're dating. Matthew doesn't have a girl now. He has never been the guy for long-term relationships. He likes a girl for a couple of weeks, then breaks up with her and starts searching for another one.
Apart from Matthew and me, there's nobody else in the big villa. There are five bedrooms, four bathrooms, an outdoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, a bar and dance floor and a home theater room. In the indoor garage, there is enough space for four cars. Matthew's mother got this Malibu house after her divorce a couple of years ago, but they're only here in the weekends or holidays, just a couple of times a year. My families villa is just a couple of miles away, but it has a smaller pool, so Matthew and I prefer his house for our surf trips.
"How are the waves?" I ask.
"It's good. I tried some today and it was good."
"Where're your mother and sisters?"
"They're with granny in New York." Matthew answers. His late grandfather was a very successful and wealthy hotelier and owned hotels and clubs all over the world.
"You didn't want to join them?"
Matthew stops eating and looks at me. "I wanted to go surfing with you."
"Ah I see."
Our conversation doesn't go smoothly.
When we're finished eating, we throw the boxes of Chinese food in the sink and go to the living room. It's nice and cool, thanks to the air conditioning and Matthew sits down on the sofa. I take one of the chairs.
"You haven't changed a bit, Brian." he says.
"Neither have you. We never change, Matt."
His bathrobe loosens a bit and I notice he's wearing nothing underneath it. It comes as no surprise to me, that's just how Matthew is. One big exhibitionist.
"You must be hot and feeling sweaty, right?" Matthew breaks the silence. "Why don't we go for a swim?"
"Sounds great." I say. "I'll put on my swimming trunks." And I get up to search for them in my suitcase. I notice a slight disappointment with Matthew when I said that I was going to put my swimming trunks on.
"OK, fine." he says and he gets upstairs to put his swimming trunks on.
The villa is situated in a remote area outside Malibu. We've never seen anybody else on this beach, it's that remote. But when we want to go out or surfing, or shopping, we always need to take a car.
We go swimming and during our swim, we both loosen up. Matthew, that's just how he is, jumps on my back and pushes me under water. I push him back and even though we're both 20 years old, we play like little kids. We play like we used to play when we were still little kids.
When I'm tired and want to go out, Matthew hangs over my shoulder, puts his hand on my six-pack and gives me a small kiss on my cheek. He lets go and together we walk back to the villa, silently.
