Maybe you should try creatine.
Athletes use it to boost muscular development, it's produced naturally in the body, and its use seems to have relatively few side effects.

Here is a paragraph from a Wikipedia article on the health effects of using creatine:
Current studies indicate that short-term creatine supplementation in healthy individuals is safe, although those with renal disease should avoid it due to possible risks of renal dysfunction, and before using it healthy users should bear these possible risks in mind. Small-scale, longer-term studies have been done and seem to demonstrate its safety. There have been reports of muscle cramping with the use of creatine, though a study showed no reports of muscle cramping in subjects taking creatine on a 15-item panel of qualitative urine markers. Creatine did not cause any clinically significant changes in serum metabolic markers, muscle and liver enzyme efflux, serum electrolytes, blood lipid profiles, red and white whole blood cell hematology, or quantitative and qualitative urinary markers of renal function.

Apparently, it can worsen symptoms if you have asthma.

It won't enhance muscular development like a steroid regimen would, but it is far cheaper, far safer, and legal to use.

It's sold over the counter.

Well thank you everyone for helping sway my decision. Your input is appreciated.

I'm overweight, but I'm no means unhealthy. The pictures in my profile are not current. Nonetheless, thank you for your concern.

May sound a bit daft, but have you had your Thyroid checked?

Reason why I ask this, is because mum is on Thyroid replacement treatment, due to low levels, and that can cause weight gain.

Dante, I did a round or 2 of steroids many years ago - it is an extreme thing to do. I did not have any of the negative effects that everyone is talking about - you really need to do a lot of a strong steroids like Decca for a prolonged period of time to get those effects. (They are not good for you mentally and spiritually I believe, and it does change the shape of your body and face in the long run for the worse. (Everything just gets thicker in an unnatractive sort of way).

They are really not for weight loss either. If you want to challenge yourself for intense weight loss do something like Insanity or P90X. Either will kick your ass naturally and you will drop enormous weight in 2-3 months. You just have to put in the effort of 1 hour a day and completely redo your diet. Ps is you don't conquer the diet when you go off the cycle - which you will have too after 6 weeks or so - the fat comes back and the muscle goes away, for real.

PS the steroid I did was Primobolan Depot which is the weakest of the bunch and non steroidal in that it is not testosterone based. I gained a lot of muscle in a few weeks; ate a lot more than I usually did; when the cycle is over the muscle starts to breakdown but your gut stays thicker as your abs put on mass from the steroids. My advice is go natural. 80% of a new body is diet the other 20% is exercise.

I'm very glad you've changed you're mind. There is no such thing as slow and safe with steroids. Doctors will even tell you they prescribe certain ones as last resorts to serious problems.

I knew a guy once that used steroids for three months then suffered from a brain anyurysm related to them. Usethem and you'll never be the same person again from a mental perspective.
