I was just watching some interviews with Troye about how the SNL thing went down. SNL had called him before to get clearance to use the song but they didn't tell him anything else. But he could see that Timothee was hosting. So it was still a big surprise for him.

I think it goes to show that Troye has a good professional reputation in the industry. It's just proof of how awesome he is--bc SNL doesn't do that for everyone.. Troye's been on SNL before so I think it was the cast's way of giving him a nod, so to speak. He was also nominated for the grammy and he's really coming up in the mainstream (which they addressed in the skit).

I feel like that was pretty clearly a Bowen Yang skit. Every so often he gets to do something that is clearly and explicitly For The Gays, and this was one of those. It was fun! All I’m saying is that I think it was more about one cast member (and a host who was game for it) pushing for a bit of a niche skit than it was a full cast decision. Still, Lorne has to give them the go ahead, so that’s good.
