For some it’s pride, but I can’t stand that. It’s thinly veiled xenophobia and racism, and the ironic thing is 90% of English people aren’t actually “English”. What with the Romans slaughtering the pagans... but I digress.

For me. It’s about not taking away someone else’s culture or history because parliaments decided to join up 4 different countries hundreds of years ago. And it’s how we are viewed, Americans like to say “British accent”.... and my god it pisses me off.

Why is there an assumption that if I identify you by the larger island you live on, that I’m also not aware of the specificity? Is this a cultural thing? Like a point of pride in England or something?

I wouldn’t take umbrage if you said to me, “You live in North America.” Georgraphically, that’s true. I wouldn’t automatically assume you were confusing me with Mexicans, Canadians, or Carribean people. You’re just describing the larger land, which is diverse and requires specificity. Likewise, when I say Great Britain, I’m not pinpointing you to a specific culture, I’m just recognizing the region. Even the actual data supports this.
