What's a tout suit? Is it like a zoot suit? :scratchchin:

Afraid C.H.U.D. will come out of the sewers and start eating people? :biggrin1:

I like how every newscast just says "Iceland volcano" instead of even attempting to pronounce it.

I'm more afraid of my precious arimail being pilfered by lazy criminal mail workers

I don't know though, BBC reporters seem to attempt to pronounce Eyjafjallajokull, I think it's a pride thing, just to show they can. :biggrin1:

Word is that is that not only Turner, but the entire Hudson River School, as well as even Edward Munch's The Scream were influenced by the "blood red" sunsets produced by the explosion of Krakatoa in the 1880's. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was allegedly written during the dreary non summer that followed the eruption.

The sonic blast from that explosion was felt in Perth, as well as Mauritis 5K miles away (and circled the globe 7X), and was estimated to be 13X stronger than Hiroshima. Winters were colder for the next five years, as the earth cooled by 1ºC. Perhaps this will create a short term pause in global warming...

Although this blast was no where near as large, do be careful, as ZOG says, the sulfuric ash can burn your lungs. Poor travelers, they maybe stuck for up to a week because of this.

You ought to google "The Year Without a summer" and see what's what/ Krakatoa did blow in the 1880's but FRANKENSTEIN was written in the 1813/14 time period. There was another volcano that went off in that time frame.

With enough volcanic ash, we could have a period of cooling, as with the extreme winter that followed Mount St. Helens. In NYC at any rate...

Ha! We need to tell NPR, they had a fellow on Science Friday yesterday who wrote a book about the worldwide effects of Krakatoa, and that was one of the nuggets he put out there.

I did google some of the art work from that period, and it's awesome.

Oh, K8, flights up and down the CA coast are still running. Virgin has a $49 fare between CA cities... so you could come up and drink wine in Napa! Best of Luck!

My girlfriend went to Milan for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (furniture show), and is stranded there. She has given up waiting and is going by bus to Ancona to take a ferry to Greece and then hopefully find a way back to Istanbul.

That'll teach her about not taking me to Italy..

The dust has settled very finely here in Bham as well, and now apparantly there's another cloud heading our way.
It's getting serious now; so many of my teachers are stuck abroad and exams start next week!
We're going to start facing food shortages soon, and I read a really upsetting article about a little girl waiting for a bone marrow transplant coming from Canada who might not make it unless it gets here soon.

Iceland volcano eruption: Ash flight ban delays toddler's bone marrow transplant | Mail Online

God what a few years we've had. Swine Flu, Recession, Snowiest coldest Winter in decades, now this? The man upstairs is seriously pissed with us English :(

My mother and brother were due to fly to Spain last Thursday when this started.Instead they spent a night at the airport hotel then went home.
They were lucky not to be stuck over there. The airports will be chaotic for days.

A week in and i still havent heard one single news report about how it is affecting Iceland and its people. Just the same generic video of people asleep on airport chains and planes lined up on the tarmac.
It's only affecting people in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. They had to move out of their homes because of the threat of flooding from the melting glacier.Flights have still been able to leave Iceland because all the ash has been blown directly south to Europe.

I'm probably one of the few who is grateful for Eyjafjallajokull's eruption. A couple of old friends from the States (USA) had invited themselves to visit me and The Squeeze. I had been haunted with trepidation about their visit for at least a month. Eyjafjallajokull put an end to that trepidation. And they cannot reschedule their annual vacation time. Thank you Eyjafjallajokull, thank you very much.
