I went to a mostly Asian high school. I hung out with the swim team. They weren't allowed to date black students. They absolutely could not bring me home. That doesn't mean I didn't get rubbed up on a little bit if the right song was playing. And nobody ever had any trouble making his presence known, if you catch my drift.

Culturally it was very different. My Asian friends burst into tears if they got a 90% on an exam. They were afraid to go home. Whenever I got a 90, I was taken out to dinner.

My school did not have a track team nor a football team. The hardest teams to get on were forensics debate, chess, Ultimate Frisbee, and for some reason, the girls basketball team. I think girls volleyball had a good season once. The golf team took anybody, but did really well. Tennis was competitive, but they didn't win much. The most physically attractive guy happened to be white, and was on the wrestling team. He could not get a date because he struck all of us to be about as smart as toast. The school was for nerds only. The second best looking guy could have dated anyone he wanted, but he preferred to become the valedictorian of his class.

The Asian girls who had me over for social events were always Indian. But I tell you this. Regardless of country of origin of their parents, the Asian pupils were about their books and their grades. Their parents tolerated nothing else. That's just one school in New York City.

I graduated from a different school where I could be top of my class. I was the only one sent to SAT prep. I did not participate in sports, and that made me an oddball. The school is geared toward autodidactic students. Most of the other students were not natural autodidacts. They just, unlike me, had no real supervision or direction at home. This school was not mostly Asian like my original School. In fact, unless you count one Filipino, I didn't meet any there.

Sure, that's just my microcosm . But it is the experience from which my perspective is drawn. We may all be American here, in the United States, but along ethnic lines, culture is very different.
