501's...TIMELESS!!!!

Second that. Though I actually prefer the 'nude' style .... classic, never goes out of style.

We all are fashion victims whether we like it or not. Didn't you see "Devil Wears Prada?" for crying out loud. The only way not to be is to make your own clothes. Yeah right. Even the stuff at thrift stores was fashion at one time. So submit. You'll like it. You'll like it and wear it. The fashion Nazis will control all your wants and desires.

How old are you, fashion guru? Last time I checked, most of the hot designers and trendmakers out there are my age and older. If you look at the trends emerging from the late-teen and early 20s crowd, you'll see a lot of what I'm talking about anyway. I am far from old, and far from clueless about fashion because of my age. FFS I work with fashion models on a regular basis. You sound like you're 15.

MTV went out of style in the mid 90s. Of course, I never watched MTV because all it played was the mainstream pop bullshit... oh wait, it still does. Here's some news: MTV stops being cool once you're over 14.

Where do you live, Indiana? Butthole, Missouri? Last time I checked, those were the places that were about 10 years behind the times stylewise. Just like you are.

Thank you. I hope HaagenDazs reads this, but he won't believe you either. Oh well.

I like your style!

To be honest i have nothing against people who want to do their own thing and say 'to hell with fashion'.
I must say i definately didnt buy into all the trends that came out (like bleached jeans - what was with that?!)
At the end of the day u need to be comfortable with yourself, and the clothes that you wear should make you feel confident. In a way i am envyious of those who say 'to hell with fasihon' because these people are so comfortable with themselves, it doesnt matter what they wear.

Me, on the otherhand. I need to look good to feel confident, and fashion is a way for me to do this.

If baggy jeans make you happy, wear them! But if you are under the impression that they actually look good, ur misguided!

have fun!

I work in the fashion industry and call tell you point blank, NOTHING IS TIMELESS. 501s have lost tons of market-share, and the unwillingness of Levi’s to change their business strategy away from this style has resulted in a business teetering on verge of extinction… when was the last time you heard of high fashion coming out of JC Penney, Kohl’s, or Sears? Take your 501s and burn them. Three major problems exist in the 501 design. 1. Tapered leg. NEVER BUY TAPERED STYLES This results in making practically everybody look shorter and fatter then they really are because you are adding volume to the top half of your body and reducing volume from the knee down. Tapering only helps individuals who are underweight or slight in build. Straight-legged styles create balance between the top and bottom halves of a man. If you are barrel-chested or have a belly try loose fit straight leg jeans, the wider you legs appear the slimmer your upper body will appear. 2. High rise. These jeans will say natural waist, or sits at the waist. They sit at the navel and do not flatter the front or the back; in fact they create a much larger backside than is necessary. 3. Stonewashed. This is a style that says i'm old and out of touch. I’m not saying that you have to run out and purchase jeans that have been splattered with acid or destroyed by sanding or even whiskered. I’m simply saying if the style says Stonewashed PUT IT DOWN and WALK AWAY. There are other styles, and a sales associate or consultant should be able to steer you towards jeans that are for a mature man that are not crazy and too youthful, but distinguished and updated to current trends. An updated pair of jeans can easily make a man look 5-10 years younger. Go down to the GAP or Banana take a look at the Denim Wall and try on a few different fits and styles… if your store has unisex fitting rooms don’t be afraid to walk out of the room and ask another customer, especially a woman (they’ll know if your ass looks good)… walk around in them… and don’t get hung up on sizes… take a few sizes in with you some bigger some smaller… but remember you have to take time, like a good half an hour to an hour

My god, you have WAY too much time on your hands. Who cares?

Here's a thought - how about we dress however the fuck we want, fashion be damned, and not try to convince others to invest in ridiculously expensive clothes made in sweatshops by children in foreign countries?

How's that for an idea?

That's a good idea. I don't even know why the hell I'm being such a cunt about this, anyway. FFS I should have outgrown this fashion police crap a long time ago. I guess I just like to argue. Or something.

Hate to break the news to you this way, but regardless of whether or not you think it's "cool," the ONLY reason to wear a baseball cap backward is if you plan to be sucking a cock, or advertising that you want to.That's a fine idea, actually. Fashion nazis have bugged the hell out of me for decades now. It has always seemed very weak-minded to me, to be so influenced by what others tell you to wear to be cool. I've always said "fuck 'em" and worn what I want, or even going out of my way to AVOID what is the current trend.

There you go making sense again.

I wasn't implying that you were a cunt, far from it. I think it IS important to present oneself nicely, if only out of self-respect. You don't need to buy a 200$ pair of jeans to do so, however, nor do you need to follow the latest trends - being a broke-ass motherfucker like I am right now has made me realize this.

I shop mostly at military surplus stores now, and I don't see the difference (except in my wallet).

blah blah blah

Perhaps the "hot" fashion designers are close to your age...

...but you're not one of them---------->

So stop making blatant generalizations about style, taste, television, as if your small acceptance level is the list to be noted for everyone. And yes...at 30, you're out the loop. And I HARDLY think you can speak for Urban styles...but we'll leave that one to the judge.

BHoliday12....you may be up on "world trends", but the reality is that baggy jeans and baseball hats are still popular.

You all seem to be assuming that when I say baggy jeans I mean the oversized jeans of the 90's (Snoozan). DUH I know it's not the 90's. I put my Roots and Alanis Morisette CD down next to my huge jeans, color ful shirts, and box cut a while ago. THAT IS NOT WHAT I"M TALKING ABOUT. However, large size jeans are STILL incredibly popular, and if you think not, you are further out of the loop than I thought you were. And baseball hats, trucker hats are STILL huge. Spare me.

DC_Deep, if a turned around baseball cap means you're into suckng cock, then you have MILLIONS of people to tell that "opinion too" because baseball hats are being worn every which way but forward.

Instead of generalizing what I said into some pro-90's conceptulization, try asking me to detail what specific style I was speaking about.

So, if as some in this thread claim, tight is only worn by us oldies, how would you explain the GAP's 1969 jeans,
they have been around for 3 or 4 years now. I like how they fit, but didn't get any, beacuse the only washes available looked filthy.

For me, in that style, there are Lee's and Wranglers that fit better than levi's, the waist to thigh ratio doesn't work, that is, for a waist that fits, the upper legs are too small.

Brittania's have been mentioned, I still have a pair from the late 70's, see attached. They are lightweight corduroy.

Dude, they look painted on. Can you even sit in those? That CAN'T be good for your sperm count...

I am not interested in breeding, so sperm count is irrelevant. They they are size 29, I usually buy size 32 these days, obviosly they are tighter than when I was a 20 something. Also, they are soft and stretchy.

I agree with you that in very hot weather, loose enough to allow air circulation is more comfortable than snug.

I WON'T SUBMIT!!!

Oh, OK. I like SOME "fashion-ey" stuff. Some. But I know what looks good on me, and most couture (yeah, I can't even spell it) would have me looking like something out of Willy Wonka. I'm forever getting razzed by my more fashionable friends for not 'doing' my hair and not applying the correct kind of makeup (in any shade) nor the correct amount. I suppose I'll remain a fashion victim forever... I tried to keep up at one point in my young life, and all I got from it was feeling broke and inferior. I came into this world nude, and no matter what I choose to hang on my body until my dying day, I doubt very highly that I'll be laying there in my last living moments thinking, "Gee, I wish I'd have just spent a little more money on my CLOTHES."

I hope I won't sound like a dirty commie, but fashion is a tool of oppression used to perpetuate the materialistic way of thinking of our society. It forces you to consume more and more, you can never have enough, it's never complete, it changes all the time... It's such bullshit. If you don't follow fashion, then you're 'out of the loop', 'not with the times', 'a fashion victim'... basically, it makes you different, and we all know that being different is a big no-no, right? Right??

Wrong.

If not following fashion makes me a fashion victim, then so be it - that's one label I'll proudly wear.

The problem with "classic" things (like 501s, which I agree are classics) is that they don't need to be replaced as often. Our economy is so dependent on "out with the old and in with the new" that calling something "classic" is like a kiss of death with certain age groups and those who are caught in the fashionista cycle.

It has a lot to do with the sensibilities. Reading this thread I notice all the people who like those super tight jeans and 501 and nut-huggers seem to be 35 or older. It's a different generation.
Why were bell bottoms once popular. Why were nut-hugging 501's once popular. It fit the times, the people, the perception, the mind, the generation.

You people who like 501's and claim to be unable to understand why my generation like baggy pants: you aren't supposed to understand. You're not from my generation, so you aren't influenced by the times. In much the same way I can't for the life of me understand why you older people want a second skin made of denim. The way none of us can understand who the hell would don khaki pantolones and overalls. It's each generation that has it's own.

blah blah blah

And yes...at 30, you're out the loop. And I HARDLY think you can speak for Urban styles...but we'll leave that one to the judge.

See, this is why I'm arguing about this, not because I think baggy pants are the great scourge of the earth, but because I really don't like the whole idea that if you're over 20 you're automatically old, out of style, and washed up. That shit really pisses me off. It's total bullshit.

So let me revise my opinions to:

1. In some circles, young and old, tighter, slimmer jeans are coming back in style, especially in Europe.

2. If you want to wear baggy jeans and XXL shirts, go ahead, just don't tell me I don't get it and that I'm old. I have a son that is perfectly capable of doing that for the next 15 years or so.

3. If you think fashion is evil and materialistic and have no desire to follow trends, good for you, you're probably right.

4. If you think we should all wear what we want and do what makes us comfortable and happy, I'm with you.

Just, if you call me old and out of touch, I'm going to get a little shitty with you.

I know lots of people in their 30's and 40's that have fashion budgets that would make Imelda Marcos blush, and I don't understand how being under 30 automatically makes you an arbiter of good fashion sense. Clothing manufactures chase the almighty dollar, and they are as interested in putting clothing on the backs of the high spending middle-aged demographic as they are exploiting the youngsters with big clothing budgets. At 30-40, you still have a whole pile of purchasing years left on the clock, so you still represent a fairly powerful lobby.

The whole "young = cool" and "old = out-of-touch" argument is a pile of shit, whether it's applied to fashion, music, or other artistic forms.

im 38 now and back in my 20's which was the 90's i still wore my jeans fitted, and have worn them like that since my teens, but in the 90's my friends all wore baggy jeans and wanted me to also ware them baggy, and i was given a pair of loose fit size 32w jeans for christmas, i usualy ware size 27w slimfit as im very skinny, so you can emagin how baggy these jeans hung on me, i needed a belt!
i felt so not myself, and only worn them a couple of times, but i had come to the conclusion that young people follow each other like sheep, they are all so stereo typical, i wanted no part of this and followd myself not others!

another thing i find so hard to understand is this... why is it ok for women to ware tight jeans but not men? a lot of people would answer, because the bulge should not be shown, so why is it ok for women to go out of their way to show their breasts and enhancing them by making them look bigger in tight tops to look sexy, but men are looked upon as being gay if they show a good bulge in tight jeans,in contrast women are not looked upon as being lesbian by enhancing their clevage, infact they are a lot of the time trying to look sexy to the oppersite sex. so why do men not like to enhance there curves to look sexy to the oppersite sex too? for some unknown reason to myself, i have discoverd that women are not turned on by men in tight fitting clothes and a bulge, infact they too automatically think the guy is gay, is this again the trend of how everyone follows everyone els like sheep?

It is not about you getting older. I mean we're all getting older. It just about generalizations which can't necessarily speak for everyone. And it's about understanding that someone who is of the generation might better speak for it.

I agree, but think that Wranglers -- though not as common in
urban style -- are better at showing your dick print than even 501s!
