Green Eggs and Ham was written by Dr. Seuss using only 50 different words
to win a bet with his publisher.

Only 50 words are used in Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham. The use of only 50
words was due to a bet that Bennett Cert, Dr. Seuss' editor and co-founder
of Random House, made in 1960 with the author that Dr. Seuss couldn't write
a book using 50 words or less. The bet was for $50 (the equivalent of $382
as of 2011). Dr. Seuss succeeded, and Green Eggs and Ham became one of his
best-selling books. In a poll done by the School Library Journal in 2012,
Green Eggs and Ham placed as one of the "Top 100 Picture Books".

What Material Was Used to Make the First Baseball Cap

Baseball caps were originally made of straw.

Straw was used to make the first baseball caps in the US. The first
official baseball team uniform was implemented in 1849 by the New York
Knickerbockers and consisted of wool pants, flannel shirts, and straw hats.
This style was mainly worn until 1860, when the Brooklyn Excelsiors adopted
a merino wool cap with a soft rounded top and a bill that eventually became
the modern baseball hat. The first major league team to adorn their
official hat with an image of their team mascot was the Detroit Tigers, who
donned caps with tiger images on them starting in 1901.

Why Are Most of Japan's Mobile Phones Waterproof?
Re: Apparently,
In Japan, 90% of mobile phones are waterproof because people use them in
the shower.

Over 90% of cellphones sold in Japan are waterproof because many Japanese
people like to use them in the shower or bath. Bathing is an important
Japanese daily routine that is thought to provide health benefits such as
relaxation and self-reflection. Despite cramped living spaces, Japanese
bathtubs called furo are typically larger and deeper than American
bathtubs. Many furo are deep enough to cover the bathing person's shoulders
when sitting. Since so many people are using their cellphones while in the
bath, waterproof cellphones began to rise in popularity. This has also
given the rise in popularity for waterproof televisions.

What Is the Most-Consumed Meat Worldwide?

Pork is the most-consumed meat worldwide. Pork makes up 36% of the world's
meat intake followed by poultry (35%) and beef (22%). In 2006, nearly 100
million metric tons of pork were consumed, according the USDA Foreign
Agricultural Service statistics. While pork is consumed worldwide, the meat
is mostly popular in East and Southeast Asia. Certain religions such as
Islam, Judaism, and certain Christian denominations forbid the consumption
of pork.

the Record for the Longest Pro Tennis Match?

2010 Wimbledon tennis match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut lasted
over 11 hours and was played over three days.

The record for the longest pro tennis match was 11 hours, 5 minutes and
took place over the course of three days. The 2010 Wimbledon tennis match
was between John Isner from the US and Nicolas Mahut from France. It
finally ended in the maximum fifth set with a final score of 70-68, and a
victory for Isner. The tennis match went on for so long because neither
opponent was able to break the other’s serve, and official Wimbledon
rules did not allow for tiebreakers until the fifth set. Isner also set a
record for the most aces served at 112

Have Baseball Umpires Always Bent down behind the Catcher?

Re: Apparently,
Baseball umpires sat in padded rocking chairs until 1859.

Baseball umpires have not always bent down behind the catcher. From the
origins of modern baseball in 1845 through 1859, umpires sat in padded
chairs positioned behind home plate. During this time, umpires were not
professional and people were invited to act as umpire simply as an honor.
As baseball gained in popularity, a greater importance was placed on
umpires making calls and they began standing. It wasn’t until 1876 that
the first professional umpire, William McLean, was used in professional
baseball history in the first official National League game between the
Boston Red Caps and the Philadelphia Athletics.

Apparently
there is a lost Nuclear bomb out there duh?

Bombs Away

The Mark 15 hydrogen bomb, pictured above, is a thermonuclear bomb weighing a relatively light 7,600 pounds. It is roughly twelve feet long and three feet in diameter. Like most nuclear weapons, it can cause a great deal of destruction upon its detonation. Unlike most nuclear weapons, we managed to lose one.

On February 5, 1958, a B-47 bomber carrying a Mark 15 took off from Homestead Air Force Base near Florida’s southern tip. The B-47 was on a training run off the coast of Tybee Island, on the outskirts of Savannah, Georgia. But the mock mission went awry, as the bomber collided with an F-86 fighter jet also involved in the exercise. The F-86 was disabled and its pilot immediately ejected and survived. The B-47 was able to remain airborne, but was greatly damaged. Unable to guarantee a safe landing — a critical concern, given the plane’s payload — its pilot, Colonel Howard Richardson, proposed a solution: drop the bomb in the ocean.

And that is exactly what happened. Richardson, with permission from command, dropped the bomb from a distance of about 7,000 feet above sea level while traveling at over 200 miles per hour. The bomb landed in the ocean just off Tybee Island and, per Richardson, did not explode. The B-47 made an emergency landing at Hunter Army Air Field, and no one, miraculously, died. Richardson earned a medal for his cool-under-pressure performance in the skies.

But what ever happened to the bomb? No one knows. The day after the mid-air collision, Air Force and Naval recovery crews took to the seas to recover the jettisoned hydrogen bomb, but after a nine week search, they came back empty-handed. Another recovery effort was made in 2001, but it, too, was unsuccessful. More recently, in 2004, another Air Force colonel asserted that he has narrowed down the location to an area roughly the size of a football field, by triangulating off heightened levels of radioactivity in the area. But to date, the bomb still sits somewhere in the ocean, unrecovered.

This may be by design. The Air Force asserts that the bomb is safer there than it would be if jostled, as they assert, the weapon lacks a plutonium trigger, which is requisite to creating an explosion. However, prior testimony from W.J. Howard, an Assistant Secretary of State, suggested that this may be incorrect, and that the lost Mark 15 is, in Howard’s words, a “complete bomb.”

Now I Know – Bombs Away

What Simple Method Did American Airlines Use to Save Thousands of Dollars in 1987?

Apparently

American Airlines used one fewer olive in every salad it served in 1987,
thus saving at least $40,000.

Eliminating a single black olive per salad from the onboard meals was the
method American Airlines used to save thousands of dollars in 1987. It is
estimated that this cost-cutting measure saved the company around $40,000
US Dollars (USD) in one year. The idea was from American Airlines Chief of
Operations (CEO) at the time Bob Crandall. He observed that many passengers
did not eat the three black olives that served as garnish on the salads in
the inflight meals. Therefore, he surmised that the airline could save a
significant amount of money without causing discomfort to passengers.

Do all contiguous US states touch at least two other states?

Apparently

Maine is the only US state that borders only one other state--New
Hampshire.

All contiguous US states touch at least two other states, with the
exception of one: Maine. Maine is the only state in the contiguous US that
only shares its border with one other state. Located in the most
northeastern part of the US, only Maine’s west side touches New
Hampshire. Other than its western border with New Hampshire, Maine has a
border with Canada on the north, and its eastern border is the Atlantic
Ocean. This proximity to the ocean plays a part in the state being the
leading lobster supplier in the US, accounting for over 90% of the
nation’s lobster.

What's Unusual about the Way Flamingos Eat?

Apparently,

Flamingos have to turn their heads upside-down to be able to eat.

What is unique about the way flamingos eat is that a flamingo must bend its
neck and tilts its head upside-down, sweeping from side to side to extract
food from shallow water. While a flamingo's diet varies by species, which
can be determined by the shape of their bill, all flamingos eat in this
manner. A flamingo then filters their food by pumping water through their
bill at around 20 times per second. The flamingo's spiny tongue allows for
easy filtration and any excess water is passed back through the bill. A
flamingo may utilize their webbed feet to stir up potential food for
ingesting. Their diet typically consists of types of algae, larvae, small
fish, insects and crustaceans.

How Old Are the Atoms in a Person's Body?

Apparently,

Every atom in a person's body is billions of years old.

The vast majority of the atoms currently present in the solar system,
including those making up every human on Earth, were created billions of
years ago: either at the beginning of the known Universe, or by processes
that occur in stars. This means that every person is made of atoms that
were forged by ancient cosmic events. Human cells are composed of around
65% oxygen atoms, with the next two most common elements being carbon and
hydrogen, as well as smaller amounts of many other elements. Hydrogen, the lightest element, with atomic number 1 (meaning that it has
only one proton in its nucleus) was created in the big bang, which
scientists currently believe occurred almost 14 billion years ago.
Hydrogen and helium atoms are combined by stars during the process of
nuclear fusion to form other elements, such as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen.
Heavier elements (such as gold, silver and lead) are created when extreme
astrophysical events occur, such as supernovas.

Did 7-Up Really Contain a Bipolar Medicine?

Apparently

7-Up used to contain lithium which is used as treatment for bipolar
disorder and can cause fetal abnormalities.

The popular soda 7-UP used to contain lithium citrate, a mood-stabilizing
drug used today to treat people with bipolar disorder. Originally called
"Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda," the soft drink was marketed in the
late-19th and early-20th centuries as a health drink due to containing
lithium. 7-UP was not the only soft drink to have its original formula
contain a drug. Coca-Cola used to include coca leaves - thus containing
small amounts of cocaine - and marketed to cure nausea, headaches, and
morphine addiction. By 1950, 31 years after 7-UP was created, lithium had
to be taken out of the formula when research showed that the drug had
potentially dangerous side effects.

How Many People Are Driving with DUI Records?

Apparently ..

At any given time, about 2 million drivers with three or more drunk driving
offenses are on the road in the US.

Over 1.5 million drivers each year are arrested for driving under the
influence (DUI) in the US. At any given time, approximately 2 million
people are thought to be driving with DUI records that include three or
more offenses, according to statistics from the State Highway Safety
Office. One-third of all drunk driving accidents are from repeat offenders.
It is estimated that between 50 and 75 percent of drivers with DUI
convictions whose driving licenses have been suspended continue to operate
vehicles illegally. DUI is thought to be responsible for at least one-third
of all traffic fatalities, even though drunk drivers generally only make up
a fraction of one percent of the total number of drivers on the road.

New figures from the D M V show that 20% of all accidents are caused by drunk drivers. That means 80% is by sober people.

Therefore, if more people were drunk we'd have less accidents.

How Was the Popsicle Invented?

Apparently

The Popsicle was accidentally invented by a young man who left a stick in
powdered soda and water outside on a cold night.

The Popsicle, the original ice pop treat, was invented by accident in 1905
when a young man named Frank Epperson mixed soda powder and water
and left it outdoors with the stirring stick still in the cup. The drink
mixture froze with the wooden stirring stick in the middle, allowing the
ice mixture to be popped out of the cup and held by the stick. Frank
continued to make the ice pops for friends and family until 1923, when he
patented the invention. The original name was “Eppsicles” in reference
to his last name combined with icicles. His children, however, called them
“Pop’s ‘Sicles” and that eventually ended up becoming the
well-known Popsicle name.

years of their lives just simply waiting in line. This study also showed
that people spend, on average, six months of their lives waiting at stop
lights, four years doing housework and two years trying to return phone
