I think it's an awesome exercise in story telling with great visuals. It's not the story but how Cameron tells it that mattered to me.

Yes it's plot has been used before but then that's true for most stories told in film or stage or writing. Titanic I am sure you could say was like any other poor-boy-loves-rich-girl story set in a ship.

I was impressed by the various fictional creatures they had come up with. wow!

I'm also an Atheist, and while the Na'vi worship Eywa, it's not some invisible fictional God that we have here. Their God is actually measurable using scientific equipment and even intervenes in their final battle, both are things no human God ever measured up to.

In other words, there is no spiritualism to the Na'vi. Their beliefs would be fantastical on Earth, but on Pandora every single one of their convictions are borne out by physical facts. Even the Earthlings and their Earth tools are able to prove the scientific validity of Na'vi claims.

Good point.

Of course in the film the planet is quite literally connected to the Na'vi (and vice versa) but on Earth that would be metaphoric - unless you count gravity.

I guess if I were Na'vi I would worship Eywa! Now if the tree outside my window would just trip a few people up for me... :wink:

Thanks for the clarification. So it is cropped on the sides? I suppose it just felt taller because the screen is so much taller. But apparently there are different aspect ratios of 35mm film too, so couldn't it be both cropped on the sides for Imax and cropped top and bottom for D3D?

It looks amazing visually, but the story is just reused, and old. Should not of been nearly 3 hours long aswell. Way to long.

But honestly, i still like Titanic better. Like Avatar, it had great (but not nearly as awesome) special effects and two wonderful lead actors, but Titanic had a better story and more of an emotional impact.

Even though the fall of the Na'vi tree was so heartbreaking.

i saw the movie in 3d on new yrs day - it was ok - but sooo long & could of been trimmed a lot - a weak story line & i feel like james cameron just dipped into every movie hes ever made to come up with storyline, action sequences etc ... however I will say I did love seeing so many people in loin clothes (hot hot hot) & the character spider mmmm very hot indeed - he kept me awake
