If this is true, then this would explain the switch up. Dude probably has to walk the straight and narrow to get full access to his dad’s resources. Actually a relatively common thing. It’s the same reason a lot of bi men (not all but many) choose to live an ultra-traditional heterosexual life.
A lot of people’s families and communities withhold financial, emotional, and social support as a way of essentially manipulating people into dimming themselves until they fit the family/community’s idea of acceptable behavior.
That’s typically not an easy thing to do, and the resulting bitterness/envy and pressure to perform often causes people to overcompensate by becoming hypercritical of the people still doing what they used to do.
Not an excuse because you could simply just quietly move on about your life instead of being a vocally judgy, hypocritical bitch, but I still understand the reason they do it.
