Brian Sims.......

It’s not just one pic. He has posted quite a few shirtless pics, including in bed.

You know people would make a big deal out of a female politician posting pics of herself in a bikini or lingerie. He benefits from a double standard. So did Aaron Schock when he was shirtless on the Men’s Health cover.

I mean you are right if AOC posted a bikini pic I am sure it would get a lot of attention and she would be dragged through the mud. But for me the problem isn't the double standard it's that kind of attitude still exists.

As for the responding to the thirst tweets I guess politicians aren't allowed to joke around or have fun either.

Would you show up at your job shirtless or showing your underwear? No, because it’s not professional. And politicians are held to a higher standard than the average person. Unlike the average person, their social media is a function of their job and is considered part of their public image, so they need to keep it as professional as possible. One of my friends is running for political office and I recently had to chastise her for using a swear word on Twitter because it’s not professional. In a time where politics has really degraded and become extremely crass, I think it’s very important to hold our politicians to high standards in terms of being professional and showing class and decorum.

I think this Tweet in response to since-canceled professional attention whore Daniel Newman was also unprofessional for a politician. I would have just ignored Dan’s thirst tweet.

You are really uptight for someone on a forum about devoted cock.

Call me a prude, but I hold politicians to a higher standard of professionalism than the average person. I don’t hold the average person to these standards, just politicians. They’re supposed to be paragons and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, class and decorum.

Politicians should not be acting like celebrities or attention whores. Trump was a celebrity and professional attention whore before becoming president and look how that turned out.

You really think politicians should be posting thirst traps like this?

Also, I just want to say, I’m a liberal and I like his political views. I just don’t think he should be posting so many shirtless pics and thirst traps. It’s not fitting for a politician. For almost any other career it would be fine, but not for a job like a politician or a teacher. There are certain careers that require a higher level of professionalism, both on and off the job.

Well in a political system that elected "grab them by the pussies" Trump to highest office sorry if I am not scandalized by a few cute pics with his dogs and some winking emojis on twitter.
Just because Trump put standards in the gutter doesn’t mean we have to lower our own standards for politicians.

Keep in mind though that Brian is a state representative. He also lives in one of the gayest cities in the country. Not exactly the same thing. If he was in the US Congress, that’d be a different story. He’s just not on the nation’s radar as people like AOC and others in Congress. Sims is still small potatoes. I will say though that I do think many of his posts are pretty inappropriate.

He’s hot, but I think he posts too many shirtless pics for a politician. It’s unprofessional. Imagine the things people would say if a female politician constantly posted pics of herself in a bikini or lingerie.

The focus should be on his job and what he’s doing for his constituents, not his looks and body. The latter is a distraction and garners too much attention.

You're exagerrating. Other than 4 posts in July 2020 (and 3 at the same time in the previous year), I can't find any shirtless posts on his Instagram:

Also, the ones from this year are from the shoulder up. He's not even showing anything at all.

Major LoL... wtf?! Now he has to date a black dude just to be politically correct?!? What world do you guys live in???

Yeah, I’m black and I disagree with that user’s comment as well. You don’t have to date any particular person to have ethos in standing up for diversity and inclusion. He can date anyone he wants. That’s the freedom we all have and should maintain.

Yes. Yes they should. More of them should.

This is hard, because on the one hand, you'd be hard pressed to find even the most fervent liberal saying there should be zero standards of conduct when it comes to public facing jobs (not just politicians, also businesspersons etc.). On the other hand, we must be conscious that these standards were often developed when politics was a game only for cis-straight men, therefore the rules unduly befit and benefit them.

It's instructive to consider discussion of the dress code of female politicians. Calls to forbid any discussion of how female politician dresses is actually misguided, because as we've seen in examples such as Pelosi, a female politician's dress choice can in fact be a potent weapon. Certainly a female politician should not be forced to spend time on wardrobe (like when Hillary Clinton wear the same pantsuits for a period of time), but they shouldn't be forbidden to use their clothing choice to send a message either (heck it should even be open to male politicians).

So we have to be conscious of the bias that people may find his social media "unseemly" just because there are very few politicians who are openly gay and active in the community. It's simply that most politicians are old people who don't use social media. If we're okay with AOC using her social media a 20-something straight girl would, we have to ask why we are not okay with Brian using Instagram like any young gay bear. Now, this is not to say we can't judge any Instathot should they run for office; it's the same standard of professionalism we expect from politics or frankly any other jobs. I'd find to hard to choose even a tattoo artist if they are acting like a narcissistic thot over one whose online page is focused on his work. And here, I don't see Brian's page to be all that different from your typical local politician. This thread is of course filled with cherry-picked thirst photos, but if you actually look, over the past year the posts are mostly his community work, local life and issues that affect his constituents. He shouldn't be discounted simply because he doesn't look like your typical privileged straight politician, in fact we should consider what his presence will mean to the newly out, young gay man, to have a guy representing the district to be someone "just like them." And that shouldn't be an impossible standard.

You make some good points. I haven't looked at his Instagram lately, so I take your word for it that it has looked very professional over the past year. I just don't want my politicians to be Insta thots. I thought Aaron Schock showed off his body too much for a politician, and that's not even taking his abhorrent political positions into consideration.

Yup, I certainly don't think it's wrong to not want politicians to be narcissists, whatever forms they may take (Trump or Schock or Instathots), but there's a lot of nuance here, and I don't know, maybe Brian was being kind of a thot online in earlier years, but I personally would take his current online presence as is even if he chooses to scrub his past (we were all young and stupid once..)
