Unlike LA, NYC's John are all located in rather easy to find bars and locations. He knew one so he could have met others. Many of kept boys jump from one fat wallet to the next as they made their way through school. Not that it was needed since we all know Columbia offered him a scholarship because he was a good student in high school and had a good story.
He should have just stuck it out with the wrestling team, but I assume not being praised for talent (college is a new level of talent) or as a star gay made him have a tantrum and rage quit. At Columbia neither his looks, untrained intellect, his parents, or sex could get him ahead so he left rather than compete.
I mean, if he was turning 30 I'd agree, but before his new explosion of tats, he was still very bankable. He even got kicked out o the Army for running off based to let a John blow his back out, so he still had some calling cards. He was doing the jet-set life for what 2 years? He had plenty of mileage left in him, but he wanted to be short sited. I think dropping out of an Ivy will be his biggest regret.

So in the new mini series Station Eleven, there a little girl who is working on play who is left behind without any adults when a tragedy happens. The guy who reluctantly takes care of her asks who is supposed to be watching her and she says “the wrangler,” and explains that’s the name for people who look after child actors on a production. I hadn’t heard he was kicked out of the Army. That must have led to a dishonourable discharge which can come up on background checks for employment.

I kind of feel Dylan doesn’t have any real sense of time, like it’s to much of an abstract concept for him to grasp and he disappoints everyone in his life because he can never show up for anything at the proper hour, day or week.
