You are right, The hurricane that just went past caused a lot of damage in parts of the country very near and dear to me, so if I had 10K to spare I would probably use it to alleviate some of their suffering and restoration to normal life, I can surely do without a sports car. The down side to even giving 10K to trying towards alleviate suffering or doing the right thing, is that the paid staff usually takes a cut and the state government will still tax your damned purchases, reducing the assistance.

If I had the 10K I would go to one of the evacuation sites and ask for 5 volunteers with families to help me in doing some recovery work. I would get them out of eyesight and give them 2K a piece for "volunteering", wish them well and send them on their way.

You are right I would bypass the organizations that collect; and assist individual families. Cutting up their downed trees, helping to rip-out the old carpeting and drywall that got wet and other hand on things I could do. One town in NC, that was affected was only a few miles away from my home town and many houses and roads I have driven past countless times were damaged. So many poor and older people do not have rental or home owner insurance in rural communities.

If he is not spending his money on helping Hurricane suffereres, then none of us is spending any time (time is money) in helping them out.
