Ha, most of our conversations here are wishful thinking, but lest anyone say we aren't offering ideas, I offered one.

Guns don't bother me in the hands of people who know how to use them, and have respect for what they do. It also helps if they are not drinking or using drugs at the time. Sadly, so often, neither of these things is the case. I don't know how to get them out of the hands of crackheads, hotheads, idiots, people with anger management issues and drunks (or combinations of the aforementioned) without punishing the crimes harder. Yes, it would tax the system. The alternative is to leave them free. Not such a good option either. I'm open to suggestions.

My wish would be to take all the crackheads, murders, child abusers and crazed, gun-toting ne'er-do-wells and put them in an underground facility and let them "shoot away". Then when they're all dead, fill it in.
I have NO tolerance for irresponsible gun owners! By all rights, I wish they'd turn the damn things on themselves! That'd solve a lot of issues and save loads of tax $$'s.
There are harsh penalties in place already for gun crimes (at least here in Indy), but the issue becomes that the prisons are already overcrowded and there's not enough manpower to yank these nutjobs off the streets. So, the "lesser" (for lack of a better term) of the gun crimes get slapped on the hand. Sadly, the crimes are often repeated with the same punishment. Until someone guns down an "important" person, these lunatics run free. It's not that the police don't care, it's that they're often tasked with so much other crime. (drug lords, spousal abuse, domestic issues, traffic issues, donut shortages to name a few). It's just too bad that some folks have to ruin their (and other people's) lives for the short period we exist on this planet.
We have a case near where I live that involves 2 young men and a 60-year old. The two teenagers were out for some jollies and picked the wrong house to rob. One of the teens ended up dead from gunshot wounds (inflicted by the 60-year-old homeowner defending his home) and the other is awaiting sentencing. Today's local newspaper quoted him as saying he "hopes he's not in prison too long because his (sic) girlfriend's pregnant and he (sic) doesn't want his child to grow up w/o a father". What a dumbass!! He's ready to take the life of another man (who IS a father) and now he's worried about HIS kid? Perhaps some forethought should have taken place before compromising another man's home. I feel NO PITY for either youth. I feel sorry for the 60-year-old for needing to protect himself, and can only imagine the grief he must feel for taking a life, but if some scumbucket climbs my windowsills with intent to compromise my home, by God, I'll not hesitate to fire some buckshot in his arse!! I'd hate to take such a course of action, but I will protect my family from such people come hell or high water.
BTW, when can we see the flannel...??? :biggrin1:

I only wish cops were actually overtaxed from fighting real crime, here in Ohio it feel like they're overtaxed from handing out nuissance tickets, but crimes never get punished. TICKETS are probably up 400% in the last five or six years. I swear the police around here have to hand out their salary in tickets anymore. If I listed all the nuissance tickets everyone I know has gotten in the last few years, I could fill a page. It would be fine if the punishment fit the crime, but when you're asked to pay over $100 because there's a crack in the plastic of your taillight (not broken, just cracked), that's insane. These broke-ass bastards are more concerned with making a profit than fighting crime. I never got so much as a follow up call from a detective after my home invasion.

Guns are much like martial arts- it never bothers me when someone approaches it with reverence and education- but in the hands of morons showing off, it's dangerous. There has never been a way to legislate intelligence, or even to agree upon what it is.

That first part about the cops being overtaxed with traffic tickets is the basis for my "willpower" comment in a previous post. I had a ticket in August for doing 62 in a 60. Yes. SIXTY-FREAKING-TWO in a SIXTY MPH zone. No way I would have won in court either. I suppose my comment about the cop having glazed eyes from the donuts didn't help.... Every time I drive the vehicle I was pulled over in on that particular stretch of road, it never fails I have a damn cop on my ass. So, I do 55MPH.
Sorry to hear your home was compromised. It is for that very reason I am now a proud member of the NRA. I hope it never happens to you again. Like I said, nothing ever gets done unless harm comes to an "important" person. Then the world stops turning and the TV gets constipated with a barrage of news flashes about how a madman with a gun shot a poor defenseless person down in cold blood. Then the gun control issue rages again. It's a vicious cycle with no end in sight because drama makes money, unfortunately. All we can do is live our lives the best we can and hopefully set an example for other folks to follow.
