I've listened to Dan Savage discuss the book, as well as his views on monogamy. I have to say I think he makes a lot of sense.
As others have mentioned, monogamy works for some people and not for others. Also, everyone's definition of monogamy can be very different. In the end it's about getting what you need for yourself and for your partner.
Currently, I'm in an exclusive, monogamous relationship. It hasn't been that long (2 years) but things are great. However, I know that in the long run, we will more than likely open things up on some level or another. However, that can only really be done with a lot of communication and trust.
In the end, for me, I think the pleasure and excitement you can get from being a little more open has the possibility to strengthen the relationship. Even if you aren't strictly monogamous.
