You're thinking of Gregory Harrison playing Dr. George Alonzo "Gonzo" Gates in the show Trapper John, M.D. IMDB lists his birthday at May 31, 1950, so he'll be 58 in about a month.

Gregory Harrison. Trapper John, MD. He played Gonzo Gates.

My better half did a show with him in New York a few years ago, and I saw him in his skivvies. It was heaven.
