New Mac !!!

I actually got a problem with my mac that I hope you guys can help me with.

My Dock at the bottom of the screen has disappeared and I cannot get it to come back again and I do not for the life of me know how it happened. How do I get the Dock to come back ?

Also, the laptop itself will not shut down and keeps saying to quit programs before shutting down, yet when I try to shut down the said programs they refuse to and these three problems are really beginning to frustrate and upset me as my laptop is only three months old.

PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE !!!! :(

Open a new finder window and go to "Mac HD" from there go to /System/Library/CoreServices and you should see "Dock" launch that and if your dock appears, then let me know. Just DO NOT delete anything out of this folder... this is the core Mac OSX folder.

also, when you get that dock back up, Force Quit the offending programs by right-clicking on them and hitting Force Quit. That should get everything taken care of.

If your programs are 'zombying' like that alot, update to 10.5.7 ASAP.

Also, "also", if you go to your "Home" directory (from the Finder, command-shift-H), then to Library, then Preferences, see what the modification dates on "com.apple.dock.plist" and "com.apple.dock.db" files are, and if either of them correspond to when you started having the troubles. The "com.apple.dock.plist" file updates fairly regularly, so it might be tougher to diagnose it being corrupt, but the "com.apple.dock.db", typically only updates when you've actually added, or deleted, something from the Dock.

i decided to wait two more weeks to get mine. This is when WWDC (world wide developers conference) starts and when apple will announce the new OS, snow leopard. This means that i will not have to pay $150 for the new os.

Just a creaky iBook G4 that still works perfectly. I love it.
I basically work on a desktop PC (an old Compaq that has only a 20-gig hard drive and 768 megs of RAM ... but is really just fine for someone who only word processes, surfs, and downloads off YouTube and the like).
But my laptop is an iBook G4 ... a haunted one, I'm afraid.
When you're typing along (and I type fairly quickly) suddenly programs will open or an entire screen of text will be highlighted.
I don't have this problem when I work on an external USB keyboard.
Don't know what's going on.
I bought the thing used and suspect that the former owner created lots of 'live' keys.
Funny thing is that peeps who know computers and definitely know Apple machines have looked at it and failed to find anything wrong.

Okay, now all that said: I'm gonna be buying an iMac soon ... for the slickness of them, the huge amounts of very useful software, the quality of build, the lessened susceptibility to viruses (although Linux would give me much of that security on a PC) ... and, at the end of the day, just for the delight I get when I look at one.
Dang, though ... they are overpriced, no matter what anyone says. But, one makes one's sacrifices.

I use a Mac laptop, but I had to ask Ben about it since I'm not a computer guy. He says it's a Mac Book Pro that's running leopard or snow leopard. He says it's a beta so who knows. Anyway, I only use GarageBand, Mail and Firefox, so I guess I don't qualify as a Mac guy, and the stuff you're talking about is waaaaay over my head.

The iMacs are nice. I'd get one if I didn't already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse that I like. What I may do though is just get a Mac Mini since I already have a decent 17" LCD. I don't like Apple's aluminum keyboards for typing. They tend to move around, provide no wrist support, and I've become so used to the split keyboard that going back to a regular one seems archaic. I like to have more tactile feedback than the aluminum keyboards have. I also like a 2-button mouse with scroll wheel. Right clicking just makes things much simpler. Given the price difference, I see no reason not to get one. You may want to look into it. They were just upgraded.

Sounds to me like someone spilled something in the keyboard. The keyboard is very easy to replace. Any Mac store or service place should be able to do it in under 10 minutes.

I noticed the same thing after the .5.7 update... I didn't read the list of fixes, but the damn thing was 449mb. Thats quite large. Since the new mini and the macbooks have the same graphics processor, the 9400m, I could also say that I noticed a huge improvement in graphics performance after the update. My dock is no longer choppy and minimizing and maximizing windows is silky smooth now. I never though about it but since the new mini has been upgraded it would make an awesome media center... congrats.

The Mac Mini rocks! From a media center standpoint, it's essentially an Apple TV with full computing capability. It can still do Front Row just like the Apple TV, but now you won't be limited to just iTunes compatible content. Use this with an Elgato TV Hybrid and a Turbo 264, and you'll create your own Tivo. Just maximize the RAM, especially if you want to deal with HD content. And consider a better sound card than the built-in mini jack on the back. Even a $79 USB card from Edirol will improve things.

I can say that I do like Snow Leopard so far... starting with v344. You have the same notebook i've got .

Sometimes, but NOT ALWAYS, Apple, in the past has done the, "If you've purchased your Mac in the last ## days, you qualify for a free upgrade", thing. I just got my Mini last week. I couldn't wait (both due to impatience, and that I have a friend about to graduate, that got me a great student discount... OK, OK, FINE! It was mainly my impatience. ) for WWDC, and the potential release.

I didn't beta it. Any boosts to performance? I'm hoping it really clears up the Mini's vid lag (MUCH better with X.5.7, but still not what it should be).

GAH! Shame, Jason! :biggrin1: Macs right click just fine. That is one of the things that irks me when people argue in the Mac vs. PC issue. You just have to enable right clicking in the preferences.

That being said, however, I hate the Mighty Mouse specifically because it has a maddening tendency to confuse the clicks if you keep your fingers closer together (which I do) so I bought teh best mouse ever, the Logitech MX Revolution!

I love my new iMac 24".
It rocks and it's so much more intuitive than my dell laptop.
I'm glad to see so many of you who know so much about the macs,VB,splitface,Novice!
Now I now whom to go to when I need help!

Developer builds are out now. And yep, it should be delivered at WWDC.

I actually haven't seen a part number disclosed for it yet at the computer store that I work at, but I have seen a part number for the upcoming 17" MacBook Pros (with 256GB SSD Hard Drives... W00T!!!). Apple usually releases a new OS around the Fall (such as the case with Tiger & Leopard), but they've been known to surprise everyone with last minute announcements. We shall see what happens. And hopefully the 256GB SSD option becomes more affordable, because I'd be willing to trade in my 320GB drive for that in a heartbeat!

CB: You can probe my brain for Mac stuff anyday!

And here I've only had 10.5 for not even a year! Bastards!

Right clicking never worked well on my Apple mouse and even worse on the wireless. I also like a bigger wheel.

For me I've seen massive improvements in just about all areas, and what I REALLY REALLY love is it's dramatically smaller OS footprint. They've taken pretty much all of OSX and optimized for EM64T.

Well Jason, I can politely tell you that these new trackpads do that function a wonder of improvement. Basically if you enable "tap to click" when you tap two fingers it right clicks, very natural.
