eh i think outside the uk blackface is still somewhat common in europe, at least in a cultural sense. it's probably why he didn't really think of it as an issue, especially if he wasn't doing it for the sake of being offensive and just as a joke. there's countries that have events that date back centuries and the performers will wear blackface because the event is celebrated the same way it was originally.
same like how in spain, there's an aspect of easter with clergy walking around like the kkk.
or that candy that's sold in a few european countries, conguitos, in which the mascot is that stereotypical cartoon of a brown man with big lips, and conguito is the diminutive of congo.
i think there's also a german candy that's called the n-word, but i think they had to change it in recent years.
a lot of this stuff is just completely normal and no one really bats an eye. it's only really pointed out and maybe(emphasis on maybe) changed because the internet allows for it to be spread and make people aware of it
