Fascinating Footage of a Reef Squid Protecting His Mate

FLASHBACK
The Elephant That Turned From Serial Killer to Local Hero
Murthy killed dozens of people, but then he devoted his life to stopping other would-be killer elephants.

Murthy had killed 28 people when the Kerala government issued an order that he could be shot on sight. Within a week, the serial killer who’d been terrorizing the South Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu fled into deep forests nearby. When the forest department tracked him down that summer of 1998, they chose to spare his life … and convinced him to join the police force. Murthy, a 9-foot-tall Indian elephant, would soon go from a killer to a kumki, a trained pachyderm who helps capture and chase away wild elephants who wreak havoc on human settlements.

Between 2015 and 2018, human-elephant conflicts led to 1,713 human deaths and 373 elephant deaths in India, according to official data. While electrocution and poaching remain primary causes of death in elephants, encroachment on elephant habitats has led to increased attacks on humans. Wild elephants in musth (a periodic condition in males where hormones rise and the animals become aggressive) are known to be extremely dangerous both to humans and to other elephants. Murthy had trampled and gored his way through the region, even as locals shot at him.

The Type D whale, pictured at the bottom of this illustration, has an unusually rounded head, spiky fin and small white eyepatch (Uko Gorter)

Type A killer whales are the largest of the bunch and enjoy a diet of minke whales, according to Main. Type B’s are smaller seal-eaters, while Type C’s are fish fanatics. Unlike these orca cousins, the Times’ Weintraub observes, Type D whales tend to circle the slightly warmer waters of the sub-Antarctic. Fittingly, the AP’s Borenstein reports, an alternative name for the suggested ecotype is subantarctic killer whale.

One of the reasons why Star Wars is failing is because they’re forcing social justice into the plot. A great movie doesn’t need to have social justice forced into the movie the plot itself will have life lessons. Look at Star Wars a Nee Hope, Luke, one person changed the world. That’s a great message and it wasn’t forced into the plot like the Last Jedi. Where they forced in an anti-capitalism narrative and then rescued Finn where his death would of gave closure to the character.

Women’s Work

Housework is a ubiquitous physical demand that has hamstrung and silenced women for most of human history. And yet it is seldom considered as a serious subject for study.

Could The Cure For Chronic Pain Be Learning To Ignore It?
For Devyn, the pain started out of the blue one night: "All of a sudden ... my hips... they just hurt unimaginably!" Devyn says. "I started crying, and I started shaking."

From that night on, the teenager's life became defined by pain. The slightest pressure, the breeze from a fan or the elastic from her clothes could cause excruciating -- and inexplicable -- pain.

Doctors are just beginning to understand a strange pain syndrome that strikes thousands of teenagers. And the treatment they're offering is even stranger: to help these kids overcome pain, they start by putting them in even more pain.

Read, or listen, to the entire story from Invisibilia and learn how a mindset shift can help patients manage chronic pain.

'Game-changing' New Drug Offers Hope For People With Depression
The FDA approved the first drug that can relieve depression in hours instead of weeks, and the first truly new kind of depression drug since Prozac hit the market in 1988.

Esketamine (marketed as Spravato) is a chemical cousin of the anesthetic ketamine, and studies show it can help people with major depressive disorder who haven't been helped by other drugs.

"This is potentially a game changer for millions of people," said Dr. Dennis Charney, dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

But taking the drug won't be as easy as picking up a prescription at the pharmacy. Read on to learn who the drug is appropriate for and how people can get it.

As a gay male I wonder why the LGBTQ+ community is willing to go to and do whatever they can to stop discrimination against LGBTQ+ people but it never speaks out against discrimination in any sense within the LGBTQ+ community.

When do you get to the age where you start to look back on your life and wonder what have you done? Have you done anything of importance? Have you used your time to the fullest? Have you spent your time wisely? Have you done anything that matters?
I say this because I have been thinking about this for a few days now and I'm sure I've hit that age. I've looked back on my life and I can't say I've done a lot that matters a lot or matters to me. I mean sure the college grad deal and got a resume full of jobs and shit but what does that mean or matter. I want to do something that matters or that matters to me or even when I look back when I'm 70, 80, or 90 and I can say I did that...or Im glad, proud, and happy I did that. Something I can be proud.

How do you reconcile that?
Thoughts?
Sorry, if that is too deep or philosophical.
