I haven't seen it yet, but I never got the impression that this Barbie movie was designed to be a "fluff movie"--it's Greta Gerwig's brainchild. If you really think about the toy/doll, it is an iconic serious instrument of our society. I assumed that is where Gerwig was going to take this film and why some critics are calling it "preachy".

while I really liked movie and LOOOOVED his performance, I wouldn't really put it in his top 5 movies:

the nice guy
lars and the real girl
drive
blade runner
he has very tight and strong filmography, unlike Margot who has more panned than acclaimed movies.
said no one ever. he's easily the best actor of his generation. just say that you watch shit movies and move on.
the guy was nominated for BA in his mid 20s for a movie that had budget of 0,7m aka no oscar campaign. only raw talent.

I only sporadically find him attractive (The Nice Guys Ryan could get it), but I've always thought he's an excellent actor going back to Murder by Numbers. His list of awards and accolades, including two Oscar nominations by the age of 37, would seem to indicate the latter isn't an unpopular opinion.
