Save Windows XP!

Never heard of it. Is Ubuntu like Linux?
Truth be told I am quite happy with Windows XP. I don't need to do a lot of fancy stuff. When I feel like tinkering with web design I use Dreamweaver 8.:redface:

Ubuntu IS linux, (well, one of it's many forms)

As for Vista... in THEORY, it has quite a few nice features...
... in reality? OMFG, what an UGLY piece of shit! M$ REALLY went overboard with the "eye candy"... I find 99% of it more annoying than anything else. The interface is counter-intuitive...
Oh, and I've _NOTHING_ nice to say about Office 2007 (and, hell, the new Windows Live hotmail interface, too) Makes _EVERYTHING_ hard to find. 30 second tasks now take 30 minutes.
Well, we had the same (not quite as hard) backlash when XP came out... I _STILL_ prefer the Win9X style, than XP's.
Keep it simple, and _FUNCTIONAL_

I don't think it is. I just think it's different. I had the same thoughts about windows 95, 2000 and XP when they came out. You get used to the new layouts and move on, until next time ...

Windows XP (SP2) is like the Windows 98 of this decade. For a Windows OS, it's solid and gets the job done. I use it emulated on my MacBook Pro through Parallels and it even runs better than the P4 box I have in my bedroom.

Vista is just not good. It's just as clunky and unstable as Macintosh's first version of OS X (10.0-10.1). It took Apple to get to 10.2 before everything started to make sense.

Honestly I have no problem with vista (aside from the system requirements), but then I'm able to edit/recreate my drivers to my liking... soo.

Oh, and ALEX8.5 go to the Users panel in the control panel and uncheck Enable UAC (User Account Control) then the Admin privileges are enabled all the time, with no "cancel or Allow". But a word of warning, it makes vista a LOT less secure, because things can run without notifying you.

True, Mac is the standard for graphics design. But most of us in architectural and industrial design use Windoze. There are too many issues in compatibility been the systems to work in Mac. It is getting better, but it is still a hassle. Also in a production environment when we translate files to CNC machine language the Mac system is not as well supported.

This is why i'm hesitant to by a MacBook. I don't know that I want to deal with the hassle involved but i've heard Vista has it's own kinks to iron out. I'm researching laptops but I want one that can handle CAD, 3dmax, and all my other fun, RAM eating graphics software.

BTW, any suggestions on laptops that can accommodate my graphics needs are most welcome.

I wish 3rd-party developers would actually create some decent Vista compatible drivers, is that really too much to ask after 1 or 2 years? (And that isn't really the OS' fault, either.)

The macbook pro has an awesome graphics card, Nvidia 8600mGT I think. Plus you can just boot into windows XP when you need to with bootcamp.

Having to make the leap from mac Classic to Windows XP was trauma enough. I always thought right-clicking was for corporate sellouts.

I have to get a faster (PC) machine in the next few weeks and I'm very hesitant to purchase with Vista loaded. I guess my major concern is in relearning work flow practices.

(The 4GB RAM usability limit on Windows 32bit is still a real shame... x64 seems to have too many issues (?) to be helpful despite its ability to use more RAM).

Ubuntu looks interesting as far as versatility and expandability goes, but I wonder if Gimp/Gimpshop/Photoshop+Wine will really be a match for Photoshop on the mainstream Os's. I'm guessing not yet.

Perhaps, perhaps not but the nice thing about that question is the zero cost entailed in finding out the answer. Other than a little time, that is.

I believe that the newest version of Wine does support Windows Photoshop CS and CS2, but i think its still being tested so it may take them a while to fix all of the bugs. No word on CS3 yet.

Ive tried Gimp. It functions pretty similarly to Photoshop and has a nice plugin system that can add a ton of interesting features. And seeing as how Gimp is free, i think its a pretty nice program.

...XP will be supported until 2014 at least. By then perhaps Vista will be sorted (or we're all on some other platform).

That is very good news indeed. I'm not changing until I see a benefit that clearly outweighs the cost and hassles of upgrading an OS.

The only complaint I have with Vista is none of my existing programs will work with it. I don't know why they can't make patches for some of these programs. I miss having my AutoCad on my home computer, not willing to shell out another $900 for AutoCad LT. This sucks...:frown1:

vista is only here for 2 years, then the whole new ''vienna''comes out.
throw away all your old xp-vista pc's, cos ''windows vienna'' is a hole new ball game. this was going to be out last year, but was not complete.
that is why thay brought out ''vista'' as a stop gap.
google it for proof. i don't mind vista now, i have got everything working.

In the defense of Vista...

1. The OEM installations done by HP/Compaq/DELL/Gateway etc... is generally corrupt and unusable.

2. None of the OEM installs contain the correct drivers for Vista.

3. Vista is configurable to look exactly like windows XP with near identical functionality.

4. Despite many OEM's feebile attempt at building VISTA compatable machines, 1GB of ram won't cut it. Bump your memory to 2GB of ram for Vista to run properly.

5. System Bandwidth for Vista is Critical. a 400 or 533mhz Front side bus is going to CHOKE with vista. Even 800mhz front side bus machines are going to have difficulty. You need to look for machines with a 1066 or 1333mhz FSB (Front side bus) for Vista to work freely.

Think about it....the average consumer is just going to go in and buy a computer with fancy features, lights, googly shit and they take it home.
Then they bitch about how bad Vista is when it's the OEM's conglomoration they mismatched to sell cheap.

I've gotten many Vista boxes across my bench, and the first thing I do is WIPE THEM CLEAN and do a Fresh Clean install of Windows Vista, followed by updates and antivirus protection.

In short and quoted from my one Microsoft buddy - "Vista is just a Hollywood Special Effects Version of XP". It takes more memory and triple the clicks to do the same thing.

Vista SP1 is supposed to change all of that.

Oh... and if your printer doesnt work...then you need to DOWNLOAD NEW DRIVERS from your Manufacturer.
