i think this was him accepting defeat, but being too proud to admit that his current content and the resulting low engagement is the issue? he already said recently that he wouldn't "sell his soul" to instagram to get himself back on the algorithm (definitely again admitting there was a problem, but too proud to admit that his content was the issue)
he doesn't need to sell his soul - just put out better pictures, show more personality or find something interesting that actually engages his followers. pick one! he doesn't have it in him though and i think he knows that. i don't think that he is holding anything back from his social media like he says.. i just don't think it is in there.
i have no doubt that the other straight male instagram models are incredibly boring and dry too.... because they are straight men! their content however has a real focus on fitness/diet, travel and fashion. they go out and do stuff. they have professional pictures everywhere usually showing off their perfect bodies in all sorts of nice locations, wearing nice clothes and different outfits every day, etc. the thing is, they have way lower followers yet their engagement is through the roof.
i guess he will post his least appealing content and just let it die naturally now?! not that he didn't post face pics and more shirtless selfies already since... but hey.
