Southland

officer cooper seems to have a boyfriend stashed at home .......I love this show, to bad that was the final. hope it gets picked up for another season.

yeah in the final 2 min of the season finale, this show might have redeemed itself for all the bad writing and implausible situations.

i mean that whole scene where the black detective was defending her house from attack violated like 10 rules of engagement. she goes upstairs and has the perfect defense position and then runs downstairs after shooting the first gangbanger, it was like a bad teen horror movie script, really insulting to any viewer. and really, with a high value witness they would never leave without backup there. step up the writing douchbags! and LOSE shaun hatosy's gf , she's fuking annoying every time she comes on i wanna change the channel, shaun's a great actor he deserves better than pussy whipped husband.

i really thought all the gay bar stuff and the subtext of cooper's drug addiction were just red herrings but they actually went there, hope it's not just a cliffhanger gimmick to get viewers for next year. and ben said the other night on jimmy kimmel that it has been picked up for another season.

it would be good if tom everett scott's character is gone for real he is lame. the casting is alot like ER , they just get alot of B list actors who need something to do and plug them into the script whether they make sense in the role or not. c thomas howell is part of that group too.

i hope they can successfully write a substantial gay character that breaks the mold for this dude, because the actor's got what it takes to crush the stereotype, if only they'll let him. only saw a glimpse of the bf but i think he works for me too.

you have a point about the writing it's not fluid and at times hard to follow but maybe it works because it is a deviating from the norm. I guess time will tell. I want a gay guy on tv that is not a Jack McFarland clone, that has some depth to him.

fluidity isnt' the problem ( i love unconventional story telling, Boomtown was brilliant, they told the same story from 3 different people's perspectives and cut back and forth between each version, and it worked) and i don't have any trouble following the story, the problem is bad dialogue, dialogue where you don't need dialogue, lame dialogue that doens't move the story, too many situations that are like "come on, that would never happen" and alot of documentary style steady-cam footage to distract the viewer and camoflage the weak script.

aside from action shots put the camera in one place and let people talk, but give them substantive things to say, or say nothing when it's appropriate. it's definitely got ER syndrome, the cameraman never stops moving around, (in an attempt to heighten drama??) it's a gimicky and dated film school technique that insults the actors.

they need to hire some writers that worked on the soprano's, homocide: life on the street, the shield, or damages etc. tweak the cast a little, and it could be great.

but to be honest, if there wasn't the gay element to the hardass cop, and ben mackenzie, i wouldn't be watching this show at all so maybe i'm just not their target audience. it's still better than being helplessly lost watching Lost

same guy as ER there are going to be similarities...........''wasn't the gay element to the hardass cop, and ben mackenzie, i wouldn't be watching this show''...... yeah what he said. lol

You're right on target with all you say ThadJock, thanks!

I like the show. Didn't pick up on the gay bar or the rookie cop's interaction with gay men on the street. Will pay more attention from now on now that you've brought it up here.

if you were a fan of the shield, ur gonna find this an amateur attempt

I am a fan of The Shield and those were my exact thoughts. SouthLAnd is a poor knock-off - right down to the use of many of the same street locations around town

i'll keep watching as long as they don't screw up the gay cop story, they laid some nice groundwork last season, i hope the writers have the balls to show some authentic gay characters, instead of the fucking stereotypical flamers all other gay tv characters have been.

i really like the show - benjamin and his partner make a good pair. i like regina king, shows a little vulnerability through strength and street-smarts; and the cop with the crazy wife and the big dog i really like. they do of course what all new shows are doing and that is makin' the blacks the innocent victims (or the bosses), and the hispanics the criminals. i have noticed that

Ditto Thad! Whether or not they further develop that last backyard teaser scene, the cop with his lover, will depend on a lot of things, all the way from censors, public opinion, to whether the characters renewed their contracts.

Even if they do develop it, it was not really a dominating theme last season. I remember having to explicitly point out where the subtle scenes were as most people did not catch on.

When will he tell his partner? 1st episode, last episode, never? Care to bet? :biggrin1:
Or, will he find out like the other cop that got handcuffed. Now that was fun.

.

i actually like the subtle way they let it unfold. an arm on the shoulder, grabbin his beer and drinking off the bottle, just the way they looked at each other. it all felt pretty real and normal.

just two average guys who happen to be gay, like the silent majority of gay men out there, not making a scene but just going about their lives. I can identify with characters like that,

that abc show Modern Family has the most offensively gay stereotyped couple on it that i've ever seen. why do networks always use the gay characters like idiot clowns? when will we as a society have the balls to view that kind of depiction the same way we view the way racist blackface minstrels were portrayed.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It's the end of the road for NBC's cop drama "Southland," which has been canceled before the launch of its second season.

Although supportive of the show, NBC brass considered the six episodes produced for the new season to be too dark and gritty for broadcast TV -- especially now that the network's 10 p.m. week-night dramas must air an hour earlier to accommodate "The Jay Leno Show."

I can't say i'm suprised nbc is in the process of committing suicide. They've bailed on every show that had any substance. "friday night lights" . instead we get 14 versions of "the office" style mockumentary crap. "community", "parks & rec", etc.

and jay leno is kryptonite, is there a person on the planet less relevant than that douchebag? he's never been funny, clever, or entertaining in his entire life, a tree stump would be a higher life form.

Letterman should do a segment called: "things more fun than watching jay leno"

the "driving into a tree" thing he had on last night for sarah palin would make a good #1

well at any rate i hope the last 6 ep's of southland make it on a dvd somewhere someday.

While I agree that NBC has sort of dug a whole for itself -- yes there have been people more irrelevant than Jay Leno, so much so, in fact, that he was the number one show on late night when he occupied that space...

As for Southland... stupid move.
