I always wear a speedo / bikini at beaches and water parks now. I really don't care what people think, but to be honest I haven't had a negative experience with it anyway. I get plenty of people chatting with me while waiting in line for rides at the water park and it doesn't seem to be an issue.

The complaint I've always heard about brief swimwear is that "you can see he has a penis". Well, guess what...I'm a male. If you couldn't figure out that I have a penis, then what rock did you crawl out from under? That's like saying "ooh, I can see her breasts, I can tell she's a woman..."

I totally agree. The Brazilians have the right idea. The men certainly aren't afraid to show off their body, and I really like the style / cut of a Brazilian Sunga or Sungão (not sure which is the correct word). It's mostly a squarecut, and it has definately made me want to visit Brazil! (Thanks to the "Made In Brazil" Blog..) Anyone know where I can get one here in the states? (I'm sure there have to be at least a few Brazilian LSPG members around)

I think that there are some speedo styles/brands that are a bit too revealing, and I don't find them fashionable or attractive. These are the blatently "gay" suits, I.E. Thong backs, 1" sides, C-in2 "Sling Support", or anything N2N. If you bought it from the pages of Undergear...it's probably a "Gay" speedo.

Americans, by an large (myslef included), are insecure about their sexuality and their physiques. Men wearing speedos do not help with this insecurity. This is why people are uncomfortable with men wearing them.

This summer, for the first time in my life, I will wear a speedo to the beach and the pool. I have never felt comfortable doing this before.

Have some patience and understanding for those not yet comfortable with men in speedos.

If my hips and legs were as nice as yours, I'd wear a speedo too. As it is, I'd look like an Egret with large bump. I am more comfortable at nude hot springs than I am in a speedo.

I think that in order to help people get over their speedophobia as it were, that speedos themselves should be made more visible and shown more in mainstream media as being nothing to be ashamed of and that men should be able to wear them with pride and be sexy and cool about it. Have mags such as Men's Health and Men's Fitness suggest speedos more in their fashion sections, as they already cater for guys who are fit enough to wear such revealing swimmers anyway. And on that note, have more ads for speedos and other revealing swimwear more often in said mags and billboards, showing that they are cool, sexy and that 'real' hetero men can wear them too and NOT be accused of being gay if he wears them.

Why so picky?

I think any guy that has confidence is in decent shape ie not super over weight but doesn't neccessarily have to have a killer body meaning 6pack abs, should be able to wear them.

Why just limit it to swimming or water polo, there are lots of water sports that would make more sense in a speedo?

Why does it matter what a guy has downstairs when wearing a speedo since there is no way to tell how big it is out of the speedo since every guy experences shrinkage in water, and it really depends on what size suit he is wearing as to how much his genitals are squished.

Great Ideas! we should all write/call these magazines news media outlets etc to let them know what their readers want to see.

I just think that it is high time guys of all ages got over this whole body shame thing that seems to be going on lately, that men cannot just enjoy the simple freedom of wearing revealing clothes and feeling sexy the same way women can in their bikinis and even going topless at the beach. It is definately a double standard and should not be a problem for us guys when we look good and want to dress to impress and also to feel good about ourselves - and wearing a speedo is the ultimate in showing self confidence and being sexy but at the same time NOT being too upfront about it.
I feel that by making speedos more 'acceptable' as everyday swimwear as much as boardshorts have been is a good way to go about this, so it should be where ut starts. Show off those fit and sexy guys on tv and movies in speedos and let guys watching know that real men are okay with wearing speedos and that women do indeed appreciate a bloke who can wear them, and then see that wearing such revealing swimwear IS NOT bad. It will also help motivate those guys out of shape to get off their bums and say " Hey, that guy in the speedos looks really good, and look at all the action he is getting from those chicks ( or guys ) !! I want a piece of that !!"

So, the loose shirt seems to cover a lot, but nipples and muscle are outlined in the loose fabric and glimpses are seen through the collar and sleeve openings. The much maligned sagging style swathes guys in yards of extra fabric, but ass cracks and ab ridges peek out and the bulge is less fettered than in tighter pants; so, it often is clearly outlined as the fabric drapes around it...

I get that. These pics of Jake Gyllenhaal may serve to illustrate your point. The clothes are fairly loose, but they flow over his body to nice effect.

I think it's strange that there's this perception that only gay men like
Speedos, either for themselves or on other guys. Most of the gay men I
know share the larger culture's perception of such things, so they
wouldn't be caught dead in a Speedo, nor would they ever admit to liking
how another guy looks in one. If they saw a guy in Speedos, they'd mock
him and criticize him for his lack of fashion sense.

My Dad was saying he is pissed that so many
guys are becoming so embarrassed to be nude or semi naked around other
blokes whatever their age was that he thought that the schools should
make speedo wearing mandatory at swim meets or during PE, and perhaps
even bring back the nude swimming days he says they used to have down at the YMCA type places before people got all 'but it's perverted' and
stopped it.

Personally, I've gotten sick of loose, baggy, shapeless, below-the-knee
shorts (although I do like pockets). The styles haven't changes much
since I was in college in the early 1990s. Someone mentioned how board
shorts make short people look shorter. I completely agree. I'm not
actually short (5'11") but I have short legs, so on me most shorts are
below the knee and make my legs look kinda stubby. They just don't look
good. I don't want short shorts, but something mid-thigh would be good,
or at least above the knee.

With regard to advertising showing men in speedos - this was relatively common back in the 70s and 80s - I included two ads from the late 70s that were both in Sports Illustrated or Esquire and other "men's" magazine at the time.
When Diet Coke first was introduced, they had brief clips within their early commercials ("just for the taste of it") in 1984/1985 of guys on a beach or pool in bikini suits. But as I have said, the mid 80s it was common to go to a beach in NJ and see many young guys -str8 guys - in speedos.

My friends and I hit the beach this week for a few days to soak up the last of summer. Being muscle heads we all had on speedos and played a few games of volley ball. We had a quite a few spectators as we played. As a group we are all confident. I myself sport my speedo even alone at the beach or at a pool. Some of my friends confess they only wear them in groups. The speedo is the best way to show off our muscles especially if your glutes are rock hard and round.

PS During the winter we play waterpolo agains a group of guys from another gym. All wear speedos or play naked as we have much privacy. I can never imagine playing waterpolo in trunks or board shorts.

is this a gay waterpolo team or something, I have a hard time imagining straight guys playing sports naked, expecially sports that include some body contact such as water polo.

No it's not a gay team. Some of the guys may be considered bi but most are married or have a gf.
Bodybuilders and aggressive jocks drop their pants at any chance to be naked. It is not sexual it's more an intimidation factor. We compare chest, legs, arms etc. If a guy has great gains he wants to show it off in front of his friends. We are a close group and feel comfortable with either a speedo or nudity.
I have played naked and never got hurt. You simply have such freedom out of the speedo. With one on you sometimes get you held junk smashed together on someone's back.

As a previous poster said, I think it's down to shame over flabby guts and asses on a lot of the guys and sparrow legs on a lot of others.

You go to any European beach and you'll see most of the guys in speedos or similar (apart from visiting Americans). Yes, some guys would be better off if they covered up, but that's just my opinion. The simple solution is if you don't like the look, don't look. If I have to wear anything at all, it'll be either a speedo or running shorts. I'm usually there to swim and get a tan, not to haul around a heap of wet cloth around. Another thing I don't like about board shorts or any long shorts, really, is that they restrict movement. Plus, if you've got any kind of muscle on your legs, which I do have as a legacy of years of Highland dancing and competitive badminton, they're invariably really tight unless you go up three waist sizes and then you have loads of saggy cloth around your butt. No thanks. Not a good look. You sparrow-legged guys are welcome to them. Give me a decent pair of trunks that look good and don't hold me back any day.

The fact that there was such a word or condition called speedophobia never crossed my mind. Speedos, along with 501's constitute my main fetishes. Looking through the bottom two drawers of my chest of drawers would certainly freak out such a person.
