From what I read, it's a psychology thing. If the guy is average, by not showing his face the watcher can imagine being the guy.

Here's my analysis:
Most guys in porn aren't that young, they're atleast above 30 and most of them around 40.
There are some guys that's been around for some time in porn, hence the age, and they deliver good scenes, so why not hire them?
Younger males who try porn have probably a hard time climbing the ladder, and since there's not very money in straight porn, they do gayporn.
The only males that get lots of money from porn are these old ugly actors on top of the ladder that does 10-20 scenes/week. The real money in porn is producing and directing. And mostly of the regular malesactors also does directing and producing.

"Unattractive" in what respect? Face, physique, or both? I assume that you are not speaking of their personalities! (I have seen some who are just such jackasses that I can't stand them.) If you are just talking about the face, I think most straight male viewers don't much care: I know I don't. The only porn guy I can think of whose face is so bad-looking that it puts me off is Ramon of Bang Bros. Back on the topic. I personally think that the reason why the guys are so ugly in films is because the videographers and directors are only interested in the cock, not the face. If they've got a big-ol' dick...it doesn't really matter what's going on upstairs because most guys aren't looking up there.
I think it also has to do with the factor of rating the women who do the vids. The girls look sluttier and thus, more attainable if they're getting off to a fat old guy sticking it to them.
