The assisted suicide thread on Politics caused me to post this thread. I was raised in a hardcore Southern Baptist family and we were taught that taking one's own life was a direct ticket to hell. I think those teachings are still common today.

i suspect folks committing suicide have already been through hell... even a vengeful god should count time served.

Virtually anything that get's in the way of or interrupts furthering the human species religion bans in some way.

I agree.

I was taught the same as the OP (altho, mebbe not as strongly), and I think it's bollocks. If someone has been through the wringer to the point that their life is unbearable and they can see no way forward, and no way of coping (despite their best efforts, over a long time usually), then I don't see how they can be blamed for taking what they feel is the only option available to them.

I'm not advocating it, as such - because I always hope that there's some way out for people other than that - but I'm saying it's completely understandable.

I'm the same i have no beliefs what so ever but i was raised as a catholic, the thing is is that a person who tries / commits suicide has been brought to such an extreme point that they see suicide as their last option to escape the pain, hurt, financial difficulties, memories or day to day sufferings.

so because this person/persons felt that this was a way to end their trauma should not and can not possibly result in their incarceration in hell. its a typical bit of shitty Christian teaching just like the one about "Limbo" which was this place where all babies who died before being christened went because they still were tainted with original sin and even when their parents died they would not rejoin them in heaven as they were unworthy of it ........ the catholic church in the 90s i think abandoned this teaching which they should do with going to hell for people who commit suicide

and just a little sub point i know I'm kinda going off the path of this thread but in Ireland anyway when someone fails or is prevented from committing suicide will be placed in a mental hospital for therapy and treatment to assess their mental state, which in my opinion is ridiculous. i do understand that it is needed in some cases where the person was using suicide as a "flare" for help but the actual idea that all person who voluntarily tries to kill them selfs is clinical insane or instable is preposterous

I'm an atheist. No, taking your own life does not condemn your soul to hell. There is no evidence that the soul exists, let alone a hell or a heaven for it to go to when you die.

Well hello there brother, nice to see another atheist.
If you don´t mind me adding something...there's no proof that the soul exists, AND, there's a ton of evidence that it doesn't.

It has always been a silly concept. A non-substantial substance? It's paradoxical.

Anyway, neuroscience killed the soul.

I was raised Baptist, but I don't believe that a person who takes their own life would be condemned to hell. I do believe that the person leaves behind people who are sad that they choose that path. Someone always cares, even if it's a stranger.
