Taboo

The pool at the university that I use runs day camps for kids in the summer. However, sometimes there are some young boys in the locker room and shower before the camps start. I don't care if they see me naked because I'm not paying attention to them or talking to them. I remember seeing naked men in the change room and shower countless times when I was a boy. The time is going to come in every young boy's life when he sees a fully developed adult male in the nude who is not a member of his family. It teaches kids what normal behaviour is among men in the locker room and shower.

Bravo, well said!

When my son was 12 or 13 the gym I belonged to had Saturday sessions for kids of parents who worked out at the gym. I worked out in the main gym and the children of the parents worked out in another room. When the session was over both the fathers and sons (most not all) took showers together in the open shower room that had about 10 shower heads in one big open room. It was never uncomfortable for either the fathers or the sons and neither son nor father ogled anyone. This not only was helping teach our sons to start to work on being healthy when young it also showed that nudity in the gyms shower was normal. We all worked out, we showered, we got dressed and we went home. No perving went on.

Good for you. I think it's up to the fathers of today to teach their kids that there is nothing wrong with nudity among men in the locker room and shower. By doing this with your son, you are showing him what is healthy and normal among men. The sad fact is that I see a lot of older men behaving in this ridiculously over modest fashion in the locker room and shower. If sons emulate their father's behaviour, what does this teach them? That their bodies are shameful and should never be exposed to other males in a non-sexual environment. It's so wrong. I applaud you for showing your son what is correct and normal and for bucking the trend of over modesty. I think your sons will be much healthier for it and confident in themselves in the future.

As long as there's no funny business between the men and boys, there's NOTHING wrong with boys showering/changing in the locker room with adult men. Those boys will all be men someday.

And Americans need to get over their sick squeamish preoccupation with nudity. Why is this country so fucked up about nudity and sex? I mean it's not like you have to be all vulgar about it, but Christ!

It's the same in Canada. There has been a major shift in attitude about it in the last decade. Nudity in the shower and locker room was the norm in the early 1990's not the exception like it is today. I have yet to see anyone in the communal shower at my new gym. I use it every time I am there, but there is never anyone in there with me.

This is a big issue with society. Media publicity of offenders etc has been made more public over the years. Someone pointed out 99.9% of us are law abiding which I agree with totally. Children now are far more educated now then many of us were in out childhoods. It is all part of growing up and feeling comfortable with out bodies and being nude around others.

There is nothing wrong at all with a 12 year old showering with grown men or vice versa.

BRAVO! So very well said!

As long as it is a non sexual situation there is nothing wrong with it, I remember changing with men in lockers when a I was younger.

Still, changing in the same room with kids ate the gym or the pool makes me uncomfortable, i avoid it.

In the pool where I go there is a big signal in the men's locker: IT IS STRICTLY FORBRIDDEN TO WALK AROUND NAKED IN THE LOCKER ROOM. Speaking about taboos...

No, I don't think it's right really. 12 is still a child and at that age, a child should not be using men's (adult/16/18+) facilities. If the venue is family orientated and a parent (father) is likely to be present, perhaps, otherwise no, at membership venues 12 and even 14 is too young. I certainly wouldn't want to finish at the gym and walk into the changing rooms to find naked pre/early teens running about.

Folks who choose to have families I think are often quite disrespectful to those of wouldn't.

There is a quiet but deep seated obsession on this site with some folk about fathers naked and such. I think it's gross and frankly belongs in the realm of taboo. I've never seen my father naked since I was too young to remember and have certainly NEVER seen him erect... I can't imagine why anyone would want too see that, ever.

But the same measure, would you want to see your mother wet? NO!

And why wouldn't 12-year-old boys and men be in the same lockerroom or communal shower together?

What part of "men's" lockerroom, do we not understand? We have a men's and a woman's restrooms. Not boys and girls restrooms too. Men simply means male.

Just so long as they aren't sharing the same showerhead or anything weird like that.

I don't have any problem with it. 12 years old is nearly practically an adult, except for this strange "invention" we have in modern times, of "teenagers?" 12 was, until very recently, nearly old enough to be married.

Well I'll say this, after puberty all our male stuff pretty much works the same way, lol.

But much more seriously now, I'd like to address the larger point here, more in line with the origin of this thread:

Regardless of age, same-gender nudity has been the most natural thing throughout most of the world throughout most of the history of the world. To warp that now, is not progress, but a prudish sickness, that makes our boys as uncomfortable about nudity and their bodies as girls who are anorexic, bolemic, etc. have been in recent years. STOP the insanity!, it wasn't all that long ago that my grandfather says he swam naked at school during boys gym every single freaking day, and at the YMCA with all same gender ages. Now just a few decades later we can't even be in the same locker-rooms together, gimme a break. It's time we grow up about nudity, and not raise kids that are more 'issues' than they need about stuff that was throughout most of time just natural and normal.

LOL, thanks!
In general, when there is no sense of impropriety, I believe it's normal and good for boys to know what men are like. There are times, however, when I'm less open about
the child's safety. At the mall, for example, when a mom, standing outside the door of a public restroom, sends her six to nine year old child alone to relieve himself. I would
never do that.

Yesterday I walked into the steam room at the gym and there were two of other guys in there wearing a towel. Usually I will sit naked in the steam room but in deference to their preference I put my towel around me. When they left, and I was alone I removed the towel. I felt that since these two guys felt uncomfortable in the steamroom unless they had a towel around them that I should not force my preference for nudity on them. However, when I came out to enter the shower for a cooling off, I saw the same two guys walk from the changing room, with wet bathing suits on (we don"t have a pool so they must have had them on in both the steam room and shower) and clothes in hand to the different bathroom cubicles which are adjacent to the shower area. When I finished cooling off in the shower and was drying myself off, these two guys came out of their cubicles fully dressed.

I can only figure to them it is taboo to be naked in front of other guys, a concept I don't understand.
