A compounding pharmacy can make up a DHT cream and that is what I would personally recommend for anyone. DHT does not aromatize, it does not cause gynecomastia, and there is a great deal of new research that proves it does not enlarge a prostate IF and that is a big IF the balance is maintained. I also suggest an anti-estrogen and an anti-prolactin if those levels are abnormally high in any amount. Estrogen fights for the same receptor sites and you want to end the fight before it starts. Prolactin also tends to rise as we age and that also plays a role in the whole thing.

There is one good thing and that is that your MD would even consider replacing it. When mine fell into borderline areas my HMO MD's response was "you're getting older live with it" that person then tried to offer me a liftime supply of anti-depressants. CRACKPOT!

I personally would not do any hormone treatments, unless i really had no ther choice and life was just to difficult without them. messing with your bodys hormones could cause cancer. just look at the hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer link in women.

Well, I came on here to post a thread about this issue. I got my test results back and found out that my Testosterone level is at 163. I've got some extreme levels of fatigue and ongoing depression; my doctor seems to think that this, along with a dangerously low Vitamin D level, is contributing to this. I have an appointment set up to go back and discuss treatment options. I'm not particularly pleased at the idea of this, but my low energy level and drop in sex drive (non-existent on both accounts), both of which have been ongoing since my mid 20's,

I thought I was a little young for this kind of problem. Apparently, I'm not.

man go in the sun. vitamin d deficiency has been linked with diseases such as psoriasis. trust from what ive read, its not something you want to increase the risk of getting.

Since you're from Australia, I will assume you don't know much about the area in which I live: Seattle. Seattle only gets an average of 160 sunny days per year. The rest of the time, and especially in the fall, winter, and early spring, it's overcast and rainy. A LOT. Sun is not something I can get an easy supply of, except for in the summer.

I'm on a Vitamin D supplement which is helping. Hasn't changed my Testosterone level much, though. It's still in the 160ish range.

I started on Androgel about 5 years ago, I am 50 now, was in nursing school and started putting on weight, midlife student lap syndrome, I thought, but then I was sluggish, wanted to sleep all the time, and up to that point in my life I was very active and never had a weight issue, but then started packing on the pounds, so finally did research online and decided to see my Doctor, told him I wanted to have my Testosterone level checked, of course he asked me why and I told him my reasoning, he said ok, but he doubted I had a low hormone level, he did check my thyroid at that time too, so my lab results comes back and he calls me at home and said my lab report was the most boring piece of paper he had seen all week, but I was right, my Testosterone level was of a 90 yr old man, in the basement, so they started me on the patches, but I would get hot and sweaty and the damn things come off, so I complained and they put me on the Gel, I am at 4 pumps daily, I have lost 40lbs, have a ton of energy, can feel good on 5 hrs of sleep, and wake up with morning Wood now, however the draw back is the wife is not, and I mean not in the mood, 9yrs she has not been in the mood, and now I am having erections like a teenager, well at least I don't have to worry about rolling out of bed....I did find out that studies show 5 out of 10 men have low Testosterone levels that can be fixed with just the topical gel, the shot is a roller coaster ride so I passed on that right away, and the patch is made for those that do not sweat...Sometimes I will stop taking the Gel because I get so damn aroused by some women that it makes me feel almost too aggressive, like Roid Rage would seem, so I manage my med by how I am feeling, so far I am staying in the correct range for my age, I am sure I do blow thru the top too when I have those strong desires, as I put it to a friend one time, "I have the need to breed"....

Male HRT is not for everyone and a very thorough history is a must. The ONLY cancer that is affected is adenocarcinoma. That particular form of cancer has genetic links.
Adenocarcinoma is in women: breast, uterine, ovarian, fallopian, and that particular cancer feeds off of estrogen. In males" Testicular male breast and prostate are normally associated as being adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma is a hormone dependent tumor, but there are some caveats here. It will not cause cancer, but, if given to an individual who already has adenocarcinoma cancer it will cause a drastic increase in the growth rate of an existing tumor.

Currently in the Scandanavian countries research is going on with HRT in men. Statistics so far seem to indicate that men placed on proper HRT are coming in with LOWER cancer rates and less problems with BPH than their non-treated counterparts. This research has not been completed. It also appears that the problems take place when the hormone levels are not balanced.

Some examples:

The most common testosterone ester used in male HRT by the inexperienced is cypionate. Testosterone cypionate is most commonly known as "Depo-Testosterone" and it is used not because it is good, but because it is the most covenient for the MD and requires less maintenance for the patient. Cypionate has many problems however.

1.) Cypionate Aromatizes big time. This means that a percentage of that hormone converts from Testosterone to Estrogen via processes within the human male body. IT is the aromatization that causes the bad side effects including gynecomastia. 2.) Cypionate also has the habit of effecting/increasing the production of blood platelets. It is this factor that can under the right circumstance create the cardiac problems in male HRT. What this means is that most of the problems take place when the wrong ester is used. This is from old habits that die hard in organized medicine. 3.) If those were not enough, cypionate is very quickly recognized by the pituitary gland and this causes down-regulation of your own hormone production. 4.) If cypionate is to be used two other things must be done with this without fail in order to maintain the balances. A.) The patient absolutely must be placed on a 2-3 week series of Beta Chorionic Gonadotropin in place of the testosterone at regular intervals. This maintains the testicular function and prevents testicular atrophy. Because in aromatization the Estrogen fights for the same receptor sites as the androgens, an anti-estrogen or "estrogen blocker" must also be used. What good is giving some guy who is low on testosterone a compound that will not only increase testosterone levels, but increase the estrogen levels throwing the whole thing out of balance that you were trying to solve to begin with? You fix one problem and then cripple your own efforts by creating others.

If your testosterone base is DHT you have the following changes: 1.) DHT is not recognized by the pituitary so it does not shut down natural testosterone production unless the dosages are insane. It does not have the blood platelet problem, it does not require anywhere near the dosage to be effective, and it does what is wanted without involving a bunch of other unnecessary things. It works very well as a transdermal.

Remember something in male HRT we are not using the drug for the building of muscle mass. We are using the drug to substitute for the androgenic side which relate to sexual function and secondary sex characteristics. In spite of the fact that the usage is very different, some idiots out of convenience still want to keep re-inventing the wheel and making a bunch of other ancillary treatments necessary. If we ad in all the rest, a number of people make more money. Remember that one!

Now, to those who scream danger! danger! cancer! cancer! I want to point out something. Many of our friends on this board are living their lives with HIV. Many of those same individuals are on male HRT and some are taking dosages that would make pro bodybuilders envious. They rightly take the cypionate ester, because they are receiving this to prevent the "wasting syndrome" associated with the cocktail combinations and the disease process itself. In addition, many of these people are not only taking the HRT, they are taking heavy dosages of HGH as well because it is part of the treatment for lipodystrophy also associated with a small number of the necessary HIV drugs. HGH under some circumstances can also be classified as a carciogenic under the right circumstances and that is documented.

These men are NOT: A.) growing prostate glands the size of basballs, B.) Not showing adenocarcinoma rates substantially above the general population C.) Not murdering people with their violence blamed on the nearly fictional "roid rage". D.) These patients ARE living longer with a substantially increased quality of life and far lower requirements for drugs in the anti-depressant class.

Last time I looked, men and women had many differences when it came to endocrinology. In female HRT, the main reason that it is or was replaced is again far different, and that is that HRT in women was first introduced as a treatment or preventative for osteoporosis. Today, there are other treatments for osteoporosis that are equally effective and actually far less invasive. There has been some research started in addition with regards to HRT in general and late onset dementia. We don't have the answers on that one yet. Where men suffer bad effects when their dominant hormone is low, women on the other hand with regards to mood and feeling do very well without estrogen. IN women, there are cosmetic issues and this is true. Again, a female without estrogen does not lose her sex drive and will have no problem achieving orgasm. Men do not have this luxury. A comparison between the introduction of estrogen to a female at menopausal age is different in spite of the fact that we call a female's situation "menopause" and we have now nicknamed the men's version "viropause". In a female it translates to the cessation of menstruation and in a male it means the cessation or reduction of a normal level of hormone production. Sounds similar but it is very different.

People need to be reminded that a great deal of the controversy on this subject is based not on medical fact but in politics. The concepts of the usage of these drugs outside of medical need is for others to decide.

When it comes to safety however there is far more danger in the following: A bottle of aspirin is an easy and quick suicide, take enough and you can easily buy that quantity over the counter without even being questioned, and you are dead and they cannot save you. Acetaminophen is the most common non-aspirin pain reliever in the world and it is one of the most hepatoxic drugs ever made. Your liver can be completely destroyed at a comparatively low dosage on this one. Oh, by the way it is a really bad death too on that one. There is a Prescription drug out there used to treat plaque psoriasis that has a really interesting track record in that it can cause Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer. Then there were all the teenagers who were given Accutaine some years ago. There are now numerous claims and a major class action lawsuit has been filed because it causes Crohn's Disease and major gastrointestinal problems years down the road. The FDA gave that sucker it's blessing!

If we want carcinogens there are more of those around you than you can begin to fathom. One of the worst is Black Mold. This type of mold common to most of the world in moist places can cause immune problems and I have personally seen two fatal cases of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma attributed to long term exposure to this carcinogen.

Then there is that alcohol based mouthwash. The FDA dropped a few not so subtle hints on that one to makers indicating that the alcohol needs to be phased out. That one touched my own family, in that my own kid was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. No other risk factors. The Surgeon that treated him had a "hissy fit" over the mouthwash and said that he was seeing this form of cancer in many of the kids at the University nearly across the street from his practice. If you've got alcohol based mouthwash in the house get rid of it.

The idea is common sense here. I become more than a little incensed when I hear a grossly misinformed individual spouting "politics" represented as medicine. Much information especially when it comes to hormonal compounds is outdated and some has political motivations and origins from times long past. When it comes to male HRT, do your homework, the information is out there, and if you know how to research the real statistics, you are far better off when you make decisions for your own health.

I am on testosterone injections 1ml per week. I've done them all jell and patches I find that shots work the best. My levels are 1200 to 1800 at its highest. I had testicular cancer twice so I need all I can get, I'm always on fire and ready for anything..

What a lot of men and some Dr's who are not endocrinologists or urologists think is that testosterone replacement can cause cancer. It does not. If it did, all 18 year old's would have cancer as their T levels are high. What it is doing is just replacing/supplimenting what the body normally has. Men who are predisposed to prostate cancer will get it, whether they are on T therapy or not. If your T levels remain in the normal range normally, or if they are "put" in the normal range by T therapy. Read up on what happens to a man who has low T levels and does nothing about it. I for one do not want the fat gain, osteoporosis, heart desease, fatigue and a host of other problems.

Okay guys, it's been aobut 10 weeks or so and I must admit that I feel much better. Sleep better, more energy, increased libido, lost belly fat and on and on. Have had a few zits, especially on my back, and my skin seems to be oiler than before....but it seems to me that I have a decreased testicle size. Has anyone ever experienced this? What should I do? Plan on discussing this with my doctor but haven't been able to get with him yet. I'm hoping that this is just my imagination. Never did have "bull balls" but they seem smaller than before.

You don't say what your dosage is in milligrams/week but I'll assume that it's 100 as that seems to be the standard (in my opinion, too low). As for the testicular atrophy, HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) therapy should reverse this. I'd reread Fuzzyken's posts as he knows what he's talking about and if you're comfortable with your MD, consult him.

I've been on Test Cyp injections for about a year (after trying gels and pills which were ridiculously expensive and close to useless) but it took about 10 months to find a doctor who would prescribe it. In my experience, most older MDs just won't consider it. Currently I'm on 200 mg/weekly (100 mg injections sunday and wednesday) which I administer at home. No adverse side effects other than slightly oilier skin, but I have read of testicular atrophy.

Sorry I can't tell you more.

same here. Small price to pay for the benefits of the testosterone.

How much of a size difference do your balls decrease? Can you tell a difference without feeling them? Do they get smaller the longer you're on it? Thanks guys for the info?

I currently am using testosterone implants, testopel. Just had my first set. No injections or creams just an implant evert 3 - 4 months. Level raised from low 2oo's to high 500's. Sleep and have better libido and energy. You bruise like hell but it's all over in about 10 days.
