For those of you who are still in college, and maybe those that just know the answer to this question, but are there still any colleges around that have the old traditional shower set-up? Like just the big open room with a bunch of shower heads, no curtains, paritions, or any kind of separation. Just a bunch of naked guys all in one room. I know at my Univ. those are non-existent and the new dorms being built don't even have community baths...all suite style. Oh..and name the college too...haha!

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign all dorms have individual shower stalls, as far as I know the only gang showers on campus are at either frats or YMCA type places but most of those are starting to install stalls in for privacy. I dont understand what the big deal is with guys not wanting to get naked, its just a dick.

My theory is that over the last couple decades, men have become more conscious of themselves as visual objects of desire. Add to that increasing consciousness that some of those lookers are also men, and you have a public hidie-weenie epidemic.

I find the penis an interesting thing. Walking around campus I look at guys and wonder how their penis looks. It's funny how no two are alike. So i wish we could get over this "hiding penis" epedimic. There are are a few places on this campus that have restrooms with urinals with no partitions. Mostly in our athletic facilities that have to accomodate a large number of people, but there are a few academic buildings that have them as well, and I make it a point to pee in them just so maybe I can catch a glance at another ding dong. LOL...i'm weird I know!

i dont think this is an issue of people being "uptight about male/male nudity". i think its an issue of not wanting to be forced to expose your dick to other people. particularly people who get off on seeing other peoples dicks without permission. i think i have the right to keep my situation to myself. :saroll: plus the right not to have to look at someone elses.

Most dorms have had private showers for decades. I spent three of my undergraduate years in a dorm last renovated in the 1970s or even the 1960s, and it had shower stalls. The strikes against communal dorm showers include the presence of transgendered students (not as rare as you might think), the phenomenon of sexual harassment, diverse cultural practices governing nudity, handicapped accessibility, and basic space constraints (the typical bather's "personal space" is far less with partitions than without).

Too true, Matthew. Several decades ago it was assumed that gays were very rare ... today, with the success of the gay rights movement, middle America realizes that we don't inhabit nearly so "straight" a world after all. With mainstream straights -- many of whom remain very homophobic -- now realizing that the locker room is no straight bastion I don't think it's any surprise that restroom designs are increasingly isolating men from each other.

It's a conspiracy set forth by the GOP.

Besides who wants a communal shower? The older buildings at my college had floor bathrooms, but from what I heard, they had curtains and stalls. There were also hall baths that literally were rooms added to a big hallway in one of the old dorms. Three rooms shared a bath. They were pretty much private. I was so happy to get a suite dorm and at the room lottery, I homesteaded. All four years I lived in the two newest dorms... suite baths, carpeted rooms, air conditioning, and wonderful people.

I agree, in Europe; sex is like high speed internet as U.S being on dial-up. Is that a bad comparison/analogy? LOL.
Nah but in Europe some places have what looks like a fountain, cut in half, against the wall and few dudes are pissing at the same time. Just whip out do your thing and leave. Its nature, you gotta piss, do so. All their satellites tv channels have sex shows and porn during the evening, not late at night. Especially German channels.
Oh tracking off course. My college had about 6 rows of shower heads with about 5 in each row. No stalls, just lots of cold water and shrunk cocks. LOL. Except this one Phillipino dude, who was fuckin huge. Til then I did go along with the stereotype about Asians.

My college dorm had an open room for showering. Still does to this day. That seems to be the exception though from reading this thread. ..maybe it's an Alabama thing.

I lived in the dorm rooms at an HBCU known as the projects. They were closed down last year. The buildings looked a lot like "the projects" - lots of graffiti and poorly upkept. The showers were all open, but there was an unwritten rule that no one would walk in if someone was showering. I never saw 2 people in there at one time. Some of the really shy guys would wash themselves in the basin, and others would wear shorts.

I followed the unwritten rule because I didn't want to get beaten up by football players. I always wanted to take a peak though.

when I was in college in the early 70's there were showers in dorms with a large room with shower heads every few feet and toilets without partitions, and open urinals and lavatories with mirrors that allowed a view of everything in the large room.

I did not live in that dorm. My son lived in that dorm recently. They have completely changed the big room. There are private stalls for showering with a dressing area. The toilets are separate from the lavatories.

I was a bit modest in those days. Illnesses have caused me to lose a lot of that. For me, I woud rather shower with another man in an open shower room than take a dump in front of a whole bunch of guys in there some showering, some shaving, pissing and other shitting as well.

I think it is a shame that nudity in and of itself is looked upon as evil by many. The fact that some may look and be turned on is a fact of life. It happens when we are fully clothed as well.

My comback to those who use the I don't want people staring and getting sexaul kicks looking at my body. I don't have a great body.

"I would rather be "looked" at, then looked over." is a famous quote. I don't know who said it, but it fits. I would much rather be in the shower nude and have other men look and get aroused than to have them look and say what a freak, bet no human has ever found that guy sexxy.

As long as unwanted advances are not made, at age 55 I would be pleased to think that anyone male or female would think I had a sexxy body and got aroused. Looking in the mirror, I don't think I have anything to worry about. I will be "looked over."

My sister used to go to Claremont McKenna here in CA. The first time I went to visit her was like five years ago when I was 15. Anyway, her dorm had group showers. I was really thrown off because (while I guess it's sort of common for guys) I'd never showered with other girls before. In my High School we had partitions, and even though you were around naked girls in the locker room, being in the shower was completely different. And these weren't girls. These were women with much more developed bodies. I've never done anything with a girl, but I definitely lingered there longer than I needed to, watching the hot water run down their bodies while trying not to be too obvious. (And NO, my sister wasn't in the shower with me!!!)

I also heard that the guys' shower had the same setup. Don't know if they still do.

The University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond still has communal showers in some wings of East Hall. The other wings have only 8 showers per that are private, so many people would wind up having to go to the open shower or be late for classes. I remember feeling awkward having to use them mainly because the floors were more broken-down and athlete's foot was more likely in them.

Southwestern Oklahoma State U where I got my doctorate had old rusty partitions in its showers. Its funny that I became more comfortable with public nudity there than I was at UCO. As an RA at SWOSU people would want me to "say hi to the folks". One morning as I was headed to the showers while wrapped in my towel, one of the residents said, "Hey man meet my mom and dad". Sleepy eyed and trying to hide morning wood I locked my door and turned around. As we were talking my towel decided to let go and hit the ground. Having keys in one hand and toiletries in the other, it took a moment to retrieve and replace the towel. His parents kept talking while I tried to break for the showers. The towel hit the floor again, so I just figured well I'll just stand here and talk nude till they bugger off. His dad seemed oblivious; however, his mom and 2 teenaged sisters did notice. That evening the resident informed me that it was one of the funniest situations he'd been in. His sisters got a college education, he got a laugh, and I got over any fear of being seen ass-naked.

I went to small private liberal arts college in NW Minnesota. The showers in the dorms had 4 shower stalls. There were tracks in the ceiling for curtains, but no curtains were ever put up. I imagine at one point they were, but I think they got in the way more than anything. No one on my floor seemed to care at all about the communal showering. Guys would come in with morning wood and just go about their business. Even walked in on a couple guys j/o in the showers late at night (not at the same time) - I let them compose themselves and get out and then I got in. :)

Obviously most here are not European. Most of Europ. is still Open showers where nudity is hardly noticed. Many Public buildings that have showers. They are open and quite often mixed sexes. And from all ages, small children to elderly people. Tho' looking at a 74 yr. old woman's body... with breasts to her navel. Would not be something I would want to see....even in dim lighting! More and more High schools in the USA do not force kids to shower after P.E. They just wipe off the sweat and get dressed. Obviously, for a builder... (I am a builder) to create walls or partitions for "stall" type showers. It is because the average person wants that. Architects more so now then before. Read polls and ask peoples opinions as to what they want or feel is needed. Poll after Poll shows Americans becoming fatter and fatter. The average person does not want to expose themselves for that reason also. Polls also conducted, why kids like the "Baggy" dress. Kids said it hid their imperfection more so. People much more today are body conscious then ever before. Even with all the gyms and adds about diets etc. We are people that eat greasy fast foods etc. Constantly stressing about our bodies as a whole. Yet to lazy to do much about it. I am generalizing here. I realize many here..have so called perfect bodies and work out everyday. I too stay fit. But that is not the norm in modern America.

If it hadn't been for communal showers at the universities I attended in the 70s and early 80s, I never would have tried sex with a male. I was frequently cruised and it was one evening when I had gone swimming and my g/f arrived just as I was about to leave that I went out to the pool and told her, "Another guy is showing it hard to me again!" I was so naive, I thought it was all just a visual game, not a signal that they actually wanted physical contact. Her response was "Go ahead and try it!" It took me a second to realize what she meant. "You mean--actually have sex with him?!!" I asked.

I was so tongue-tied when it came to initiating sex with men that this was the only place I could do it, where you didn't have to say a word. There were a couple of times at the nude beach, but I was too worried about being seen there. At the showers, you could just enjoy a nice hot shower, get half-hard, exchange glances and then meet at the exit and walk to whomever's place together. I lived for almost four years in an apartment less than two blocks from the gym, which was very convenient!
