Are People Predisposed to Root for the Underdog?

apparently

Research has shown that babies tend to side with what they see as the
victim in a contest between squares and circles.
Whether it was a sports competition or a political election, we have all
rooted for the underdog at one point. Was this because we were truly
rooting for that team or person, or did we do it because we are predisposed
to root for the underdog, regardless of who or what it is? A group of
researchers attempted to answer this question with a study involving
infants, squares, and circles. As the circle appeared to pursue, bump, and
smash the yellow square, the researchers observed the reactions of the
infants. Some 16 out of 20 infants reached out for the yellow block.
Researchers believe that this may be a sign of human beings' predisposition
to root for the underdog.

Will Anthrax Kill a Vulture?

apparently ha
they need to feed on the animals that start WARs grrrrr

Vultures have extremely acidic stomachs that can typically digest anthrax,
botulism, cholera, and salmonella.
It might make some people a little squeamish, but the sight of vultures
feasting on nearby roadkill is actually great for the environment,
especially in warm climates. Vultures prevent the spread of disease, but
they don't get sick themselves because they have extremely acidic stomachs
(near zero pH). Since vulture stomach acid is so corrosive, it allows them
to safely eat carcasses infected with botulinum toxin, hog cholera and even
anthrax bacteria -- all deadly pathogens that would be lethal to other
scavengers.

How Expensive Is Air Force One?

apparehtly

During the Obama administration, it cost $228,288 (USD) an hour to operate
Air Force One, the presidential aircraft.
The cost of flying the President of the United States on Air Force One is
continuing to skyrocket. In 2014, documents released after a Freedom of
Information request showed that it costs the Air Force $228,288 (USD) an
hour to fly the presidential airplane -- an amount that includes fuel,
onboard food and drink, repair costs, and aircraft and engine overhaul.
Just two years earlier, the hourly cost was estimated at $179,750.

How Contaminated Are Rio De Janeiro's Beaches?

apparently
but bring on the OLY,PICs anyway .. mmmmm suspect ..
we NZ are quite proficient in these disciplines,bummer/dicey ..
world's most elite rowers,
canoers and sailors

Some estimates say there are 1.7 million times more viruses on Rio deJaneiro's beaches than on California beaches.
About a year before the 2016 Olympic torch would be lit in Rio de Janeiro,
an Associated Press investigation found that the world's most elite rowers,
canoers and sailors were likely to compete in water with dangerous levels
of viruses and bacteria from human waste. The amount of disease-causing
viruses on Rio's beaches was up to 1.7 million times higher than the level
considered hazardous on a Southern California beach.

What Happens When Astronauts Cry in Space?

APPARENTLY

Zero gravity means that you can't cry in space; tears stick to your eyes as
liquid balls and eventually float away.

You can cry in the zero gravity of space, but the tears won't stream down
your face like they do on Earth. That's what astronaut Andrew Feustel
discovered during a spacewalk in 2011. He wasn't actually weeping out of
sadness -- his eye was watering because a small irritant had lodged there
during a seven-hour repair mission outside the International Space Station.
The tears "don't fall off of your eye, they kind of stay there," he said
later, describing the "liquid ball" that clung to his eyeball

Are the American Flags on the Moon Still Standing?

apparently

Five of the six US flags on the Moon still stand, but they have faded to
white from the effects of time and UV rays.
It has been more than 40 years since astronauts sank American flags into
the lunar soil. But are those star-spangled banners still waving? Images
from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera prove that five of the six
are still upright, based on an analysis of the shadows the flagpoles cast
on the Moon's surface, but the condition of the flags themselves is
unclear.

if you listen long enough ..

Does Anyone Keep Old Web Pages on File?

apparently

Since 1996, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina library in Egypt has kept a virtual
record of every web page on the Internet.
If you've ever used the Wayback Machine online to find an old website, you
know old web pages are kept somewhere. But where? Alexandra, Egypt, famous
for being the site of one of the ancient world's greatest libraries, is now
home to the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina
(BA) stores copies of every web page that has been posted since 1996. The
Internet Archive, which started in San Francisco in 1996, signed an
agreement with the BA in 2002 to create backups for their archives, which
have the capacity to hold 3.7 petabytes of information. That's a lot of
data.

What Gifts Do Penguins Exchange as Courtship Tokens?

apparently

Male Adelie and Gentoo penguins give pebbles to female penguins as
"marriage" proposals.
Adelie and Gentoo penguins have a thing for pebbles and small stones. Males
fight over them as though they were valuable gems, and couples prize them
for their role in nest building. They are, in fact, a symbol of penguin
love. When a male offers a pebble to a female, it is a token of his desire
to settle down and have a family. If she accepts and places it in her nest,
they are officially a couple.

Are Sumo Wrestlers Considered Good Luck in Japan?

apparently
The Japanese believe it's good luck to have a sumo wrestler make your baby
cry.

A good cry can be beneficial for the soul. That's the gist of the annual
Naki Zumo festival in Japan, a tradition that goes back 400 years. Every
year, sumo wrestlers (also known as rikishi) assemble at temples and
shrines, while parents bring them their babies so that they can be
frightened to tears. The competition is inspired by the Japanese proverb
“naku ko wa sodatsu,” which loosely translates to “crying babies grow
fast.” So, sumo wrestlers are good luck for babies, at least.

Who Wrote the Pledge of Allegiance?

apparently

Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance as part of a campaign to
sell flags to public schools.

According to a 2013 telephone survey of 1,000 adults, 68% of respondents
said they believed that American schoolchildren should say the Pledge of
Allegiance every morning. But how did the pledge first come to be recited
in schools? The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis
Bellamy, the son of a Baptist minister. Bellamy worked in the promotions
department of a family magazine called Youth's Companion. One of his duties
was to prepare a patriotic program to help schools celebrate the 400th
anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. This
went along with a marketing campaign in which readers who sold
subscriptions to the magazine would receive an American flag. Youth’s
Companion decided to include a "salute to the flag" as part of the Columbus
Day celebrations. Francis Bellamy took up the task and his efforts resulted
in the Pledge of Allegianc

Has Anyone Ever Bombed the Moon?

apparently

During the Cold War, the US considered dropping a nuclear bomb on the Moon
to intimidate the Soviet Union.

Although it now sounds absurd, US military scientists in the 1950s briefly
considered exploding an atomic bomb on the Moon. In a 2000 interview,
physicist Leonard Reiffel admitted that the secret plan, known as Project
A119, featured a rocket that would deliver a small nuclear device to the
lunar surface, where it would be detonate

Is McDonald's the World’s Most Popular Restaurant?

apparently

Subway is now the largest fast food chain in the world, with some 44,000
locations.

Ever since the first McDonald’s fast food restaurant opened in 1955, the
burger chain has been expanding rapidly across the globe. For many years,
McDonald's was the top fast food restaurant in the world in terms of number
of locations and revenue. However, in 2010, the sandwich chain Subway
surpassed McDonald’s as the world's most popular restaurant. Subway has
about 44,000 locations worldwide, compared to 36,000 McDonald’s
restaurants.

Why Do Potato Chip Bags Have So Much Air?

apparently

Potato chip bags are filled with nitrogen, not oxygen, to help preserve the
taste and freshness of the chips.
Potato chips are purposely packaged with extra space to act as a cushion
and keep them from being crushed during handling. But it actually isn’t
oxygen that is taking up so much space in the bags – it is nitrogen, the
gas that makes up 78% of the air we breathe. Nitrogen remains stable around
other chemicals, which makes it a useful preservative. On the other hand,
oxygen reacts with nearby substances. If potato chip bags were filled with
oxygen, the potatoes and the oil in the chips would end up becoming soggy
from the humidity and they would eventually spoil

Is the Sun the Biggest Thing in the Galaxy?

apparently

A star named Betelgeuse in the Milky Way galaxy is roughly 700 times bigger
and 14,000 times brighter than our Sun.
The Sun is the biggest object in our solar system. It is nearly a perfect
sphere composed of hot gases (mostly hydrogen) and located in the center of
our solar system. But is the Sun the biggest thing in the Milky Way galaxy?
Not at all. Betelgeuse, a red giant, is about 700 times bigger and 14,000
times brighter than our Sun. A red giant is a large star that is in the
last phase of its lifespan. Betelgeuse has a diameter of 600 million miles
(about 965 million kilometers) and it emits almost 7,500 times more energy
than the Sun. Since it has neared the end of its life, Betelgeuse may
become a supernova and explode in the next ten thousand to one hundred
thousand years

Who Ordered the Grounding of Planes on 9/11?

apparently

Ben Sliney was on the first day of his job with the FAA when he ordered all
planes grounded on 11 September 2001.

Two jumbo jets slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in
New York City. Another hit the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in a field in
Pennsylvania. In response to the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001,
Ben Sliney ordered a ground stop for the entire United States. It was
Sliney's first day in his new position as National Operations Manager at
the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

How Old Are the Apples Sold in Grocery Stores?

apparently

It is possible that an apple purchased in a U.S. supermarket could be up to
a year old.

One of the many joys of fall is the availability of sweet, crisp apples.
But unless you've plucked them yourself right from a tree at the local
orchard, you might not be getting fruit that's all that fresh. That's
because many fruit companies treat their apples with a compound called
1-methylcyclopropene, an FDA-approved colorless gas that prolongs the
ripening and aging process for as long as a year.
