What is a circumcision party ?

I've never heard of one in the UK so I assume they must happen in the US.

Has anyone ever been to one ?

And what exactly are they for - do they happen before or after a circumcision ?

Are you talking about the party to celebrate having the circumsicion as a baby, or some sordid thing where men get together and have their foreskins chopped off by an obese old man in a leather thong as a sexual practise ?

Lol

I think what you are referring to is a Bris: the Jerwis ceremony performed on a newly born male child after 8 days.

The Mohel who performs the ritual circumcision is a person who has received specialized training in the medical and ritual aspects of the bris. The moment of the bris has a great spiritual effect upon the child and therefore Jewish law specifies that one should choose a Mohel who is noted not only for his technical skills but also for his level of piety. It has therefore been the tradition that a Rabbi, cantor, or spiritual leader will also serve the community as a Mohel.

But as far as I know there is no party, but not being Jewish, I am not sure. Maybe one of the Jewish guys out there can give more of an insight on this.

All I know is that a good friend it may be thoughtful to come to the Bris with a gift, something like an infants outfit. In some cases perhaps the parents have set up a baby gift registry where people who wich to bring a gift can go to see what is needed.

I did a websearch for "circumcision party" and got about 7000 hits. It seems the concept spans many religions and spans the globe. One of the hits was BBC piece about a such a party in Tanzania. In that case the actual circ. of a boy was in a hospital and the "party" was afterwards.

Of course, I think it's perverse, bordering upon being sick. But kudos to Matt for starting the thread. It's a facet I hadn't didn't know much about and still don't.

Oh yeah? I think it has an effect on him alright, but not anything I would describe as spiritual. Maybe Matt is talking about circumcision palaces like in Turkey where boys are supposed to get out and dance with their mothers after they get chopped like nothing even happened. Maybe this is the way their culture transfers blame to the women. :scratchchin: Definitely not a healthy state of affairs.

The circumcision palaces you're talking about are not very common in Turkey. There are a few in the big cities like Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara, but these lavish circumcision celebrations are usually held by religious muslims and if you take a look on the sites of these "palaces" you'll see nothing but women in headscarves and men with prayer beeds.
In Turkey, women in headscarves are not so common as in Arab countries, as Turkey's a secular country. Wearing a headscarf is illegal in public buildings. And in 1922 the constitution gave women and men equal rights.

So that blame thing, I don't think that's the case in Turkey.

I don't know about you, but if I had to dance with my mother with a bloody penis as a token of bravery, I'd sure as hell blame somebody. I heard about a little Turkish boy who screamed, "give it back!" after being cut. The adults laughed.

I can't think of any reason to celebrate getting circumcised, much less having it done in the first place!

Fuck that religious ritual bullshit, it don't need to be done!!!

Some years ago, while a student at university, a student friend of mine fell in
love with a Jewish girl and converted to Judism so that they could marry. He
had been Roman Catolic and was never circumcised as an infant. Prior to his
conversion, he was circumcised at the university hospital, and a week later,
he hosted a conversion/circumcision party (an all male thing) which was held
in the social hall at the local synagogue. Not being Jewish, I'm not sure if this
is a common thing among adults who convert.

I was aware of the Jewish service of Bris (Jewish infant circumcision) since
some of my friends had Bris parties for their new sons which I have attended.
At these parties, the guests gather around the Rabbi-Mohel (like gathering
around a Baptismal Font in a Church) and he does the Bris (cutting) with a
special instrument (I think it is silver) and then everyone celebrates. I'm
sorry, but I could never look while it was being done.....but, none of the
infants ever screamed bloody murder or acted like it was a big deal.....they
did cry for a minute or two and that was it.

My sister married a jew and almost had one for her son, I thought it was kind of a messed up reason to get the family together, especially since I hardly see them at all, I also thought it would be really awkward small talk as well

"well that was the best penis cutting party I've been to"

The Bris is like a pabtism, so yeah, there is a party afterwards.
In Turkey, the circumcision at age 11 is a huge thing with a huge party afterwards.
In africa, after the men go thorugh the manhood ritual and are healed, there is a huge party to celebrate their becoming men.

So yeah, there is a history of partying after circumcision.

But if you are refering to circumsexuals getting together to discuss/compare circumcisions or mimic one of them getting circumcised, this would be different,
