Ethnic Groups

words cannot be inter-changed with impunity when they refer to totally different social and political realities, in this instance referring to access to power, money and social acceptance. pretending otherwise can stem from either ignorance or bad faith.

Had you used the reverse negative epithets toward anyone of any another ethnicity you'd be labelled a racist.

Odd how the same rules don't apply Shelb.:33:

surely, this thread is going all over the place!
what is fascinating is a matter of perspective. anything is potentially fascinating if we pay it enough attention. all cultures are fascinating if we can be bothered to study them with sympathy.
most powerful nations and social groups have at some point had more or less blood on their hands. so all of us, whatever our heritage can feel guilt about the doings of past or present governments.
being proud of ethnic origines is absurd. for a semi-literate greek to take personal pride in a supposed filiation to plato is as absurd as it would be for a blind dutchman to take personal pride in the paintings of rembrandt (and this is not meant to be offensive to the visually handicapped). to assume that an englishman is a great poet because shakespeare was, is as absurd as it is to assume that every African male you meet has a large dick or that all arabs are moslem fanatics.

Good. Thanks for your explanation. I went to University in England so I lived there too and it's just those same things you dislike that appeal so greatly to me since restoration/conservation architecture is my life's work.

Much like my heritage and my homosexuality I suspect it's somehow written into my DNA to find things English appealing innately.

By the way? I'm absolutely crazy about the beach at Ipanema. I love Brazil. There's a piece of me that feels a personal affiliation that's beyond the tactile too to the place. Odd that.

I'm predominatly Black with some native american and english. I'm very reluctant to give my age, ethinicity, etc. Over the internet for fear of being pigeonholed.

WOw ,

I hear you. That is a very valid concern unfortunately. I think a lot of people would like to just be accepted for who they are at the core but it doesnt seem as though life works out that way.

What's up with the "Ethnic Food" aisle in the grocery store ?
Isn't everybody part of some ethnic group one way or the other.

In the 1800's if a Tribal African or American Indian were to be transported to anywhere in europe they would think the folklore, clothing, music, architecture, tools and food as equally facinating as the europeans did of theirs.

Yes,

We are all part of some or multiple ethnic groups but... with the recent influx of latin and Asian immigrants , grocery stores are attempting to cater to that portion of their customer base.

Well, from just seeing my hat, I've been approached by 5 of them on here, so I know they're out there.

Back to the original question... How much time do you have? I AM the "melting pot", a total mutt. Basically, I'm northern European, with some southerners (mainly Greek) thrown into the mix. Part of my mother's family arrived to the U.S. in 1629, and then on my dad's side, while his mother was American, he's an immigrant, born in Canada. To hit a few of the majors; Swedish, Irish, Russian, English, Scottish, French, German, Greek, there are about 6 more, but you get the idea.

Gisela, the Aboriginal peoples of the Americas were colonizers too at one time, their ancestors having come from Asia. When they came 'here', their presence also disturbed the local fauna, flora, etc. They did what they needed to survive: they built homes, they hunted and killed their rivals or enemies.

I must say that I am tired of 'some' people portraying the 'ugly Europeans' as murderers or as 'ugly colonists'. Throughout the centuries and millenia, Europe has also been the theatre of mass killings, genocides, epidemics and wars....

My ancestors immigrated to Canada from France four centuries ago; therefore, the epithet 'colonist' is quite inappropriate (I was born and raised in Canada-- I am a native!). Besides, one of my ancestors was Aboriginal (Mohawk or Blackfoot).

I am mainly of Northern European stock (French, German and Scottish)-- a Euro-Canadian-- with some Amerindian blood.

Well...good for u Stronzo.

But for me...

I cant say English are "fascinating" (no way) because they wrote history... and they may wrote it very wrong...they had to much to say at some point in history...well, they are colonizadores...like other peoples were...

Well, some English people are interesting and made great contribuitions but they are not "fascinating" in my view...

Me too...Black, Irish, and Nanticoke (southern Delaware).....I spent time in both the Res in (mohawk) Lewiston, NY.....and Cherokee, NC. Very sad.....one of the visions i saw while there broke my heart. A once noble warrior,..long black hair flowing in the wind....drunk and riding a kids bike about 3 sizes too small....

1/2 Finnish, 1/4 German, 1/8 each French and English.

The Finnish side I can trace back a couple of hundred years, the German side about 150 the French only 3 generations and the English about 200 years. There's a good chance the German side contains some Lithuanian or Polish but I haven't got that far yet. All my ancestors came to the US between 1860 and 1889.

Hey,

I knew some Nanticokes... Do you know any of the Harmon family? The oldest brother was slated to be chief at one point years ago but he moved to NYC and decided to speak Spanish...
