Yep! Put this on billboards! Maybe their mommies told them not to let other boys see their pee-pee. What a load of crap!

What is all this stupid nonsense about showering with your clothes on?! Seriously, i have a hard time thinking of a more sissy, weak and non-manly thing to do than being so damn embarrassed about being naked and essentially about being a man, that you'll shower with your freaking shorts on.

Why do some guys seem to confuse nudity and sex? The locker room is a non sexual place but it damn sure is a place where men are NUDE. It's really the only place left where men are men and not construction workers, accountants, cops, politicians, etc. Stripped of our clothes we're just naked men. So if you got a pair you'll shower naked. Like men always have. This isn't about sex or dick size or even nudity. It's way bigger than that. It's about taking a damn stand for our male culture. Do we want a world where men are ashamed of their dicks? In other words ashamed of being male... I don't.

There ought to be a law against these coed facilities. Just like my chain gym in San Francisco. After changing into a speedo after workout a few times to go into the steam, I said fuck it and just wrapped myself in a towel, being careful not to show my bits (because of the possibility of a chick walking in). Whatever the rules were, noboby ever said a goddamned thing.

My Y (2 branches) has only coed Steam room, hot tubs, and saunas.

I don't go to the gym, but we had open showers at high school (early 1990s). Never had a problem. We had some shy kids who didn't shower much, but sports were the last part of the day, anyway, before everyone went home, so it wasn't as if we had to sit next to them in class or anything.

These posts seem fairly blaming of the young men and their mothers. Perhaps the fathers have a role to play - as role models? I think this modesty becomes entrenched (somehow) over a number of years. I can relate - I was EXTREMELY pee-shy. It took me many years of gentle self-talk and desensitising to the situation to become relatively comfortable now. Telling someone to 'get over it' or 'man up' reveals a lack of understanding of the situation. Maybe these comments are less than helpful.

I just can't believe all the issues with showering at the gym or wherever. I know I hated it in school, and it was mandatory back then (late 70's). That was because I was smaller than a lot of the poplular guys. Well, I had to do it and got over it. I'm still a grower and not a shower, but, if I'm at a gym or a sauna/steam room that isn't coed...screw it....I'm naked! Heck, I'm 47 years old, I will not let such crap ruin my life. No one since high school has ever commented on my size. Even in college where my locker was next to this black guy who was hung like a horse. We changed and showered at the same time. No big deal.

To all they guys that are shy, don't worry, be happy! Or to quote the fine folks from NIKE...JUST DO IT!!!

Ever notice that even though more showers are private (stalls), fewer guys use the showers now than in the past? My athletic centre has both (stalls and Bradley shower towers), and I can't tell you how many times I'm alone in there showering. I see so many guys just change into their clothes from their workout clothes without showering - YUCK! :yuck: I don't know how being sticky and smelly can be preferable to showering around other guys. :dunno:

I think the biggest problem with the showers in school as I recall, is they didn't give us enough time to use them. I don't mind communal showers, but if there's only time to get a fast sprinkle, what's the use? I want to enjoy the feel of that warm water, not be rushed out to catch the bus or the next class period.

BTW, I don't care much for sports anyway.

I'm pretty sure that a lot more boys are being raised primarily by single mothers these days.

I can totally understand the pee shy thing, but that really isn't the same thing as showering naked in front of other guys, is it? I mean you don't have to pee in the shower.

I don't think anyone is condemning the modest guys. Obviously, generally speaking, they got this from somewhere.

Fascinating reading this. I guess it is something girls tend not to have any problem with , having a shower.

Really? From what I understand, the whole idea of showering together in an open shower is foreign and horrifying to most women. My wife couldn't believe it when I told her that this is how guys (used to) shower. Even in the days when it was all open showers for men, women always had the privacy of stalls. I think what most guys here are saying is that women (in particular single mothers) are imposing this feminine idea and attitude on their sons who are growing up into overly modest young men.

Likewise. My wife is horrified by the idea of open showers. I have no problem with them, and can't believe that people are so shy about using them. I would never go exercise at the gym, then leave without a shower.

I was very surprised to learn from my wife that the women had private stalls WITH CURTAINS! We had private stalls in my dorm at college, but there were no curtains.

The sensual aspect of taking a shower is nice, but if getting clean is the goal ... that can be done very quickly.
And surely getting clean is the essential.

What I meant was, we dont have anything that REACTS and therefore noticable when in a shower whereas men can sometimes show signs of arousal ( I see it with my b/f)

I belong to a gym in a small upstate NY town. There were no showers at all until recently when new locker rooms were installed. There are two showers in the men's locker room, each with a curtain AND a small ante-room with ANOTHER curtain where one can change in private. Absurd! Then, to add insult to injury, a couple of weeks ago a notice appeared on the bulletin board requesting that men cover up at all times while in the locker room!!!!! I added a comment saying "OMG, a naked man in the men's locker room. Run for your lives!" The notice disappeared.

A few (mostly older) men will remove all their clothes, including shorts, when changing, then shower. All the younger men keep their underwear on, put on their gym pants, work out, then put on their street clothes over the same underwear and leave.

I think I live in a town full of really up-tight dudes.

Good for you man! I guess your sarcasm made them realize how absurd they were being. Personally, I would take my gym business elsewhere if I saw such a ridiculous sign. I belonged to a gym like that a few years ago. I got so fed up with new rules regarding nudity appearing weekly in the men's locker room that I quit that gym.

At the university athletic centre where I work out, the modest vs. immodest thing is about 50/50. Usually the freshman/frosh are the most modest in their first year because they have just come out of high school and are still programmed to believe that nudity=sex. Usually after the first year, they lighten up a little. The 2nd year students and beyond usually are a little more relaxed about nudity and won't be as modest. Then there are guys like me that always have and always will prefer the open shower concept and reject the stalls completely (which were thankfully not there when I was a student). Usually after students see me and other guys being relaxed in the open shower, they tend to lighten up and do the same. Some though seem to never get over their modesty no matter how many years they have been in university. I feel sorry for them. They are missing out on a really great male bonding experience that they may regret later on in life.

I go to my university gym in the mornings before my first lecture, so I need to shower otherwise I'll be sweaty for the entire day. They are private stalls, which I am thankful for since I grew up with them and would feel a bit uncomfortable with group showers. However, I always get undressed in the locker room, and only once I'm naked do I put a towel around my body. I then walk to the showers, shower, dry off in the stall, walk to the locker room in my towel and strip there to get changed. I always quickly make sure I'm totally dry while I'm there, so I spend a good minute naked. It's not that I'm super shy and don't want anyone to see my dick, because they can if they want, it's nothing special. It's just that I would feel uncomfortable walking around the whole time naked like some guys do. Some of them spend a good 10 minutes walking around in the nude, drying themselves, messing around on their phones and stuff like that. I just wouldn't feel right doing that because of my upbringing, when everyone in high school did what I do.

I don't have a huge dick nor am I in the best of shape, but I would go in and shower naked if I knew I wouldn't get a random hard on! That would be embarrassing..to me anyway
