I just don't understand the need for people to create fake personae.

If you really don't understand this, then you should read more. Alter-ego fantasies have been part of our culture for centuries, from The Prince and the Pauper to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to Spider-Man. The alter egos Ziggy Stardust, Tyler Durden, Anastasia Beaverhausen all provided opportunities that their hosts wouldn't have taken alone. The internet has made it possible for ordinary people to 'write their own' fantasies. The people who are being exploited by these false identities are hidden away by thousands of miles of internet cable, which makes it easier to rationalize away the consequences of one's actions.

HI,

Though we each may have insecurities, boredom, dissociative personality disorder, or whatever the "excuse de jour" happens to be, there are real people who read these. In an attempt to be a support group, we on occassion do reach out to one another and try to connect. For any of us who are creating full fledged alternative personas put the shoe on the other foot. What do you think it would do to you if you were perpetually blindsided by revelations from people with whom you "thought" you were developing a friendship? We need to find a good balance between the protection of personal and potentially damaging information and the willfull duping of innocent fellow members who are being brought into your con game no matter how "innocent" ( I use that word cautiously). PULEASE! STOP THE MADNESS or get some meds and therapy outside of this forum.

Yes, but that is literature. This is real life--or semi real life, since many of the people don't know each other personally. Alter-ego fantasies in a book may be ont thing, but this is messing with real people and real emotions. That's the difference. I don't understand why people need to do it in REAL life and feel the need to hurt someone because of their insecurities.

When you said "semi-real life" I think you were on the right track. 'Life' for many on the internet isn't real.

If I were to create an alter-ego to massage my self-esteem needs, I'm probably doing it for selfish reasons and other people's emotions are not my concern. Also, I'm sure people who make up the alter-egos justify their actions by thinking, "other people are doing it too." With that rationale, your hurt feelings are inconsequential because to me, your 'persona' doesn't exist either. It's the same reason most people are able to be rude to a person on the phone versus face to face.

But as to your question, I don't think any of us (unless you're a psychologist or psychiatrist) will ever truly understand why people feel the need to create alter-egos.

Okay KoolKat, I'll explain it again, I don't like to chat, but I chatted with you. Yes it was only a FEW times, but it's not something I enjoy, especially with people I barely know. I made an EXCEPTION for someone I thought was a pregnant young girl without a close mother, I reached into my heart for what turned out to be a nonexistant person AND you even followed me to another forum! You don't understand why I'm pissed, then I can't help you, maybe meds can.

Yeah, I'm being an egomanic, well maybe that's true, but I DO seem to attract the loonies- what would YOU make of it if it was YOU, over and over?
Thanks for contributing to the pile, one more and I have a poker hand.

a dingo just ate your apology

or at least it seems that way when you flip from contrite to contrary when Mme Zora states her honest assessment about her feelings and your earlier behaviour.

Should there be an alter-ego amnesty day? Where people reveal that they aren't who they portrayed?

Seems that you tried ,Koolkat, but you should have taken your lashes from those that had befriended Tilly

This is the internet-- be prepared to be hurt-- then pick up the shattered pieces of your life and move on-- rebuild
