Because they're assuming that you believe the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God. It's a default assumption that a lot of Americans have.
No Christian -- even Bible Christians -- follow the Bible. For one, the Old Testament is full of stories that where you could be killed for eating shellfish.
Even if they ignore the Old Testament law, Paul, in the New Testament, really wanted most men to be celibate. You shouldn't be married unless you "burn" with passion (what man doesn't, unless he's been castrated or has low T).
