This is quite correct. This was a Bristol Pailn/Sarah Palin joke that was set against a Yankee game. "Alex Rodriguez" is a star player for the Yankees. That's why he was chosen. Race had nothing to do with it.

It's funny how we can even agree that Letterman made the job in somewhat poor taste (like Wanda Sykes hoping that Rush Limbaugh's kidneys would fail), and yet we can see right through Palin's gross opportunism at getting offended. Or, even better, Republican politicians have said outright nasty things about Democratic candidates, women and men inclusive, and yet it was this election cycle that they jumped all over the sexism thing.

But I think you came a little too quickly on this one. Someone already busted you out for misidentifying Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees guy, as a black man. Letterman made no inference about rape; he was talking about sex. Not all sex is rape (unless you're a radical feminist, I suppose). But why did Palin and everyone else all knotted in the wad about this assume that Letterman was talking about her middle daughter? Shit. Why didn't they just go for broke and call out Piper? Because it wasn't there.

Like I said, Letterman made a brutal joke. Not all comedians hit it on the mark. But, you know, per their job as entertainers, comedians get a lot of latitude in saying the things that we are too prim, proper, and stuck-on-it to say in real life. That's what they do. They make a living on making the jokes and calling out the commentary to create a (hopefully) humorous spin on what goes on in everyday life.

Paul Mooney. You ever heard of him? He wrote for Richard Pryor. On "The Chappelle Show" he had a segment called "Ask a Black Man." You know what he did? He gratuitously used the n-word to make some pretty intelligent and brutal points. Funny as shit!

Rodriguez is of a different race than Palin. Any of the other superstars I listed above are household names and could have been used in the joke, but Letterman's fetishes required that he used a latino.
