It is a self centered point of view, because you make a generalized statement about men and their nature based on your personal experience in your circle of friends.
It is in the human nature to compare one with others, it is in the human nature to want to outdo others, if you go by psychologist Alfred Adler this is the basic path of the development of human personality. But that does not necessarily mean it is in their nature to show off. There is a tremendous difference. A showoff to me seems only be necessary if the person is not assured enough of his/her self. Men need to know they are with a hot girl, and that certainly has to do with comparing, but i wouldn't say men need others to know they are with a hot girl. That really seems like an act of insecurity to me a cry for reassurance and respect.
I can not judge what the average is, but i have no reason to believe that the average male is that insecure about his self. Maybe it is in fact the case that the average has become so neurotic, but i doubt it and my opinion is as good as yours since neither of us can prove it in any way.
