It’s fun but only if you know the right crowd. When I was a senior in college, I became an unknowing "peacock" in the locker room, not because I had an impressive dick but rather, because by senior year after having lived with the same nudist roommate since freshman year, I was used to seeing a naked body daily and I had embraced being comfortable with my own naked body. I was one of those guys who walked around the lockerroom with the towel in my hand or draped around my neck never my waist. I was the guy who stood there air drying not caring who was looking.

If walking/strutting around the locker room at ease totally naked, not caring about who was looking or judging was called "peacocking", then that definitely was me.

I guess the times have changed from when I was in my freshman year gym class in high school in the 70's. All the students were freshmen males. A couple of upperclassmen acted as assistants to the football coach/gym teacher. The coach and assistants watched you shower and inspected you afterwards to make sure you had washed under your arms and had a clean ass crack and asshole. You had to show your white towel stepping out of the shower room and dry off in front off a coach/assistants who approved that you had washed under your arms, behind your ears, and your groin. For the ass area, you had to run the towel up and down between your butt cheeks and rub your anus. The towel was supposed to be white. If the towel was soiled, you were sent back to shower go repeat the process. In the next gym class, your punishment was to run 10 laps in the gym wearing just your required white jockstrap and sneakers...no white short gym shorts or white t-shirt. It didn't happen often but when it did, it was the talk of the school. My parents would have been horrified to hear from the school that I didn't know how to shower properly.

At this point in time, with virtually everyone having a smartphone, I can see how younger guys might be hesitant to peacock in a locker room knowing that someone could take a photo and send it around on social media platforms without your knowledge or consent and upend your life. That kind of scenario is very plausible and scary today.

Being naked around other men is a cultural thing. I'd typically associate this to religion but not in this case. More religious cultures are more conservative and modest but I've noticed this is not the case with nudity. It has to do more with extraversion and introversion.

I can speak about northern and southern Europe. In the south (both east and west) cultures are more extroverted and social. Probably because the weather predisposes people to spend more time outside and bond with each other. In the north people are more reserved and shy. Probably because the weather is shit most of the year and they spend most time indoors in their own company.

When it comes to nudity in the gym, men in the south definitely feel very comfortable walking around naked. Not necessarily showing off, but just casual. Even chit chatting to each other. In the north, gym locker rooms are so devoid of character and interaction. Everyone is with their headphones and wending their way. More sombre environment and people are much more reserved. I've seen some guys shower naked in the open shower but they're just hiding facing the wall. Many will shower with their underwear too. And forget about full nudity outside the shower, let alone peacocking.

So it's definitely a cultural thing. Sometimes unconscious, other times very aware that they are not comfortable being naked in the north when no one else is. There's a subconscious push for everyone to stay in their lane and not invade other people's space (visual space in this case). In the south people are much more relaxed and the culture is even inviting to show off, be manly.
