It was a combination of things. Firstly, when I reached puberty and realised I was gay, I was afraid of getting a hard-on if I saw the cock of another guy pissing alongside me. Secondly, my Mum brought me up to think nudity and sex was dirty. To be honest, in one way I agreed : my "privates" were private, to be shared only with those I wanted, and not just anyone in communal showers and public toilets.
