I don't give give a flying a fuck what they do on TV as far as "objectionable" content, i.e. "vulgarity" (which I find a ridiculous concept anyway), "nudity," "sexuality," et cetera.

The only thing I found objectionable about that montage is that there were so many clips from South Park, which is brilliant social satire, interspersed with completely worthless reality TV clips and dumb "edgy" primetime TV dramas.

And yes, though leather isn't TOTALLY my scene, I'm pretty adaptable. The DC Eagle to be precise - on NY Ave. Been to Bound and MAL too.

Okay, First off it's safe to say that I am not a prude. I mean hell, I am on a freakin big prick web site. With that said, in my opinion, Jeff is absolutely right. That clip friggin amazed me. Every now and then I pick up Entertainment weekly to read about Movies and book stuff during a lunch and invariably I turn to see what the top shows were for the week. I keep hoping I see just one show of value..JUST FUCKING ONE!! Each time I am disgusted beyond belief. If I see one more CSI anything I will be institutionalized. In my opinion they pander to the lowest aspects of human nature. But you know what? As adults If you want to watch them then go ahead. I am not judging anyone here for watching that stuff. I am sure some of the stuff I watch would disgust you as well. Not due to content but due to its cheesiness or just laugh out loud funniness that relies on thought to evoke a laugh as opposed to a fart joke or thinly veiled masturbation reference. But it's not about us. Its about kids. Do I believe in censorship? No, I do not. What kids watch should be monitored by their parents. With that said, as adults, hopefully invested in the future of society we need to take a look at what we watch and be mindful of all that are able to view this. We need to find a balance between what has little value but is funny and what furthers us a people. What's more is that we have to send a message to the people making this crap that we aren't mindless fucking drones that will dance like puppets because one crime drama got good ratings and therefore 17 clones will satisfy us more: each one trying to make the next sex filled decapitation crime seen the one that will tear viewers from the others. I think that is what sickens me most. The networks that create and air this shit are shoveling this shit down our throats because we are telling them we want it. The spark of creativity is gone. It is just the same freakin formula with a new title, different location and different generic actors that have mastered the "art" of looking at a dismembered stripper in a gutter and feigning true concern. If you have made it this far without telling me to shut the fuck up then I implore you to make a change. Be mindful of what is on and when it is on. We are adults that are hopefully able to discern the difference between what is real and what is TV fiction. If a show is on at a time that coincides with kids being up, and not just your kids if you have them but any kids, turn it off. It will not kill you to see one less chalk outline of a murdered prostitute or suburban professional Dad with a secret for Bondage and discipline. By doing so you will be telling networks that they can this pap at a time that will not negatively impact teens that are already trying to determine where they fit in society and what rules of behavior to emulate. Yeah, I have droned on. But it is important that kids have a childhood. The long and short of it is that if we don't make a change then we are going to be paying for teen mothers and fathers on Welfare, Kids and young adults that are living with Illness brought on by consequence free sexual imagery. Help your kids realize that the world is a place of joy and wonder not one where everyone kills, steals and fucks with hate instead of love. I guess I could have put it simply by having you ask yourself one question, "Did what I just watch add to the world or take away from it?" Thanks for listening. And thanks Jeff for allowong me to vent and send a message of hope. Thor

Aside from the South Park out-takes, I hadn't seen anyone of those things. I guess the "edgy" dramas are all on cable. Cable is where Discover Channel... and I'll eventually find out that Disney is there too.

Reality television, Rupert Murdoch (Fox, it's affiliates, and most of England's tabloids) and the Hiltons will be the down fall of Western society.

I guess my standards are too high to watch most of what's in the TV top 10.

The only redeeming show on Fox is "House". I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day, which is how often they show "House".

Hey FX is all stuff that children should not be watching, and I love Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me, but they have a lot of sex...

I'm glad I am able to watch all these things on TV, it does not bother me in the least, Don't wana watch it? Change the channel.

PS I like CSI (Miami The most), South Park, Drawn Together, the HBO Comedys (Which I dont get) and basicly every other "bad" show on television! And House... and 24...

So much of the stuff that's popular on American TV leaves my puzzled and disappointed. How can such tripe remain so popular? Broadcast TV programming really does seem to pander to the lowest common denominator mentality.

Is the rest of the world so banal and lowbrow?

Okay, I'm going against the grain here and suggesting that clip was completely unfair. I watched it, and all it had in it were South Park clips and reality show clips and some other short clips thrown in for good measure. The point is it was a SHORT clip. It didn't run 24 hours and it didn't give you a broad enough view of tv as a whole.

If tv has gone to shit, then why are there such channels as Discovery, History, HGTV, TLC, DIY, PBS. And if tv has indeed gone to shit, what about QAF or The L Word or hell even Will & Grace? Granted, not the best representation of gay people but for some it was the only way they could see themselves on tv.

And I absolutely HATE the phrase, "We must protect our children!" Why? Because that's one of the catchphrases used against gay people in a very real way to deny us human rights. If you want to protect your children, get a V chip, monitor your children and what they watch, turn the channel or just turn the tv off once in a while. But that would take personal responsibility, and nobody wants to take responsibility because it's easier just to point the finger in blame.

If tv has gone to "shit", I say it's because there are so many choices out there nowadays that if you are an upstart channel, you need to prove yourself and prove yourself quick, otherwise investors will pull out. And if tv has indeed gone to "shit", then it's because there are more people that will watch the lowest common denominator type of show than will watch something uplifting. Again, it's so easy to point the finger in blame instead of taking a look at ourselves and what we watch. If you want shows that don't pander to the lowest common denominator then watch only those shows. Pretty soon when the shows that are "shit" start to lose ratings (cuz it's all about money in advertising and syndication, people) the network executives will take a good hard look at their programming and try to pander to what the public wants so they can charge outlandish prices for advertising and syndication.

I will be honest, most tv bores the hell outta me. I cannot tell you how many times I have fallen asleep in front of the tv because it's so goddamned boring. But it's completely unfair to call tv shit.

And now I will get off my soapbox...

I don't have a problem with explicit sexuailty or violence on TV if it provides more than titilation designed to cover up the lack of characterization or plot. South Park is a satire, and the profanity isn't there merely to get a rise (like a wardobe malfunction). Explicit violence on SVU isn't gratuitous, just as sex on QAF wasn't. Serving up violence and sex for exploitive purposes, however, is tasteless at best, insulting at worst to me. If I watch porn, I know exactly what I want it for, and it has nothing to do with storyline, etc. If I tune in to a TV show to see a story, I want quality, not shock value. Graphic sex or violence in those shows is a letdown. That said, I realize that everyone tunes in for different reasons. TV producers are providing what a lot of viewers want. I just happen to be among those who agree with Jeff on this one.

Ok, for Jeff's sake, I am going to agree that TV sucks for the most part. But instead of it all going downhill, I am seeing what I would call a "bi-modal distribution" of quality. What I mean is that the crappy shows are getting crappier, but there is another class of shows that represent a kind of mini-golden age for television.

On one hand there are all the stupid reality shows and vacuous sitcoms. But on the other hand you have:

The Sopranos
Deadwood
Rome
The Wire
West Wing (well, not any more).
and a few more that I haven't watched yet.

These shows all have astonishingly high production values. And all except for West Wing, they are living parables for the true complexity of life and its moral ambiguities. I give West Wing a pass, because it is not on cable. But compared to TV of ten years ago, even West Wing is astonishingly complex with its fast moving multi-threaded story lines full of political drama along with the human drama.

But the HBO shows I mentioned are amazing. I am sure there are good ones on the other cable outlets as well.

The amazing thing is that the HBO shows I mentioned are all extremely complex. Watching The Wire is so much work that I you lose a few pounds with each episode. You have to acculturate yourself to the police culture and the culture of the criminal group they are investigating. You have to learn the rules of both societies and the jargon of both which dominates every spoken line. And you have to learn all this by being thrown right into it without a life jacket.

Then there are the amazing characters in the shows, with the criminals perhaps being the most interesting. Take Omar in The Wire for example. Is that guy an epic character or what? Or what about E.B Farnum, Al Schweringen in Deadwood, or Paulie Walnuts in Sopranos. You can't even find characters like these in movies.

Anyway, 99% of the shows are crap. No argument there from me. But there is that 1% that is getting better all the time.

Sorry jeff, if that wasn't much of a rant against tv quality. But I do loves me my HBO shows.
