Why Was VinylBoy Banned?

Interesting that many of those displeased by the ban focus on the principles involved...and that many of those "supporting" the ban focus on the banned member's perceived personality.

Correct.

If you, Bbucko, CalB and I were moderators (not a bad team if I say so myself ) we would have taken a different view of all this. The reason is simply that some cases are subjective. Being "inflammatory" is very clearly in the eye of the beholder.

Should VB have changed his style because of the repeated warnings? Well, the man answered that one himself, sadly for us IMO.

The problem is we have no way of knowing if it was his recent behavior that got him banned or if it was something that happened behind the scenes (i.e. a private message to someone, a nasty visitor message, or back talk to the Moderators.) If it was his recent behavior I call bullshit- there was nothing improper about it especially given the nature of the forum it had to have come from. It puts anyone who posts passionately at risk for an ultimate ban (as apparently evidenced in thread asking them politely not to ban me... which I didn't start by the way.)

If it was something behind the scenes, I don't care as much, and would be satisfied with an answer from the staff saying "He had it coming." I trust their judgement as the three I've had interactions with don't strike me as vengeful or reactionary.

A slight elaboration (not asking to let in on who really killed Kennedy) wouldn't be out of line considering this thread has now gone on for nine pages.

Kid give it a break! You're not going to get any more of an answer than has already been given.

He's had multiple warnings and temp bans and he finally got the big one. The mods are under no obligation to explain to you, me or anyone else here why someone gets banned. The reason was posted, move on!

What are you going to do if he doesn't, beat him up? Sheesh...

The mods having no obligation to explain why a member is banned doesn't mean that a person cannot ask. All they can do is say "yes, we will elaborate" or "no, we will not". I cannot remember an instance where any mod told a member to "Piss off and mind your business!" in response to an inquiry concerning a ban--and your anger and insistence that someone stfu about it won't change that. Good grief...

Let me say in closing that I am not trying to further incense you. For goodness sakes I am not--frankly, it would be scary to see you get angrier. Peace (literally).

No I'm not going to beat him up.

I'm not angry about anything. The poster has posted similar posts in different forums and has already been told by one mod that they will not divulge any more information as why why VB was banned. Shouldn't that be enough?

Where you come up with I'm angry is beyond me. I stated my opinion about the situation and backed it up with the facts. To keep beating this dead horse is simply futile.

Have a nice day.

You've been around here long enough to know that these threads occur whenever a long-standing and generally popular member gets banned. They are instrumental as both a form of protest and as a vehicle for healing and moving on. Your opinion of VB, and those of all the other grave-pissers who've posted in this thread, has been stated clearly enough, thanks. Gratefully, it's a minority view.

JSZ hasn't been here long enough to have seen threads like this here before. He's not posting in this thread trying to tease out a response from the mods/admins; he was told in his thread in the Questions, Comments & Suggestions forum that the process behind the ban remains confidential. However, certain members of the rank-and-file here may well have a better insight into VB's banning (a specific post, visitor message or PM) and might well come forward with it. That's what happened in the wake of HazelGod's ban if you'll recall.

SilverTrain summed it up nicely, I think:

Interesting that many of those displeased by the ban focus on the principles involved...and that many of those "supporting" the ban focus on the banned member's perceived personality.

Edited to add:

This was most definitely NOT the case after DC_Deep's unjust banning: it wasn't just rescinded but a public apology was issued. I obviously don't believe that such will happen in this case, but "beating this dead horse" is obviously condescending to not just JSZ but to everyone who has posted an opinion contrary to yours in this thread.

We are justified in being confused about this banning because the straw that broke the camel's back is just not obvious. That's why I started this thread in the first place.

Exactly. Because I'm confused over exactly what it was he did wrong (I'm pretty sure I saw most of if not every post he made in the political forum the week he was banned) I'm concerned that the standard can be applied arbitrarily to things that it shouldn't be applied to; for all we know all one has to do to earn your first warning is post in an impassioned fashion. That's what concerns me. The rules, as they have been applied, aren't clear in regard to this poster of whom I was obviously a fan. I

f my posting in his defense and my polite request for a slight elaboration (was it public or was it private- whatever it was he did) is just too much to ask for and offends you to the point of telling me to sit down and shut up I'm sorry to disappoint... but that won't happen, and as evidenced by the multitudes of other posters in this thread, I'm not the only one.

I reported him once and nothing happened. I can tell you from experience that he can be extremely meanspirited. Over and over and over again. Like...really bad.

Who wants to be at the end of that abuse? No one. Spending all day, every day digging at people who have a different opinion is ugly and unhealthy. Lonely too.

I admit that I have been negative and mean a few times here because of my "opinions", but when every post is bashing a user for one reason or another, it gets noticed. No matter what nickname you choose. Maybe when he gets back, he'll be a little more gentler with expressing his..."Opinions."

I know that he's had issues with certain members of this site before, but banning him just seems sad and a little silly. He's one of the highest-quality posters we've ever had here, with over 10,000 posts, most of which were thoughtful and very detailed.

Color me confused :mad::frown1:

dude, if you thought his posts were "thoughtful", "confused" is indeed your shade

Our opinions are now free from the scrutiny of someone who will relentlessly reply with dissenting opinion to no end/avail.[/QUOTE]

You're kidding right?

So glad he's gone. I could only hope it will truly be permanent. He was a corrosive, vindictive, person who's principle method of beating down the opposition was painting those with whom he disagreed as stupid, neanderthal, and racist. I could never understand the sedative-like effect he had on those who agreed with him. I think his anger just made them feel justified in their own.
