Atheism = Farce!

I see it as atheism being pretty much the current fad.We know that most people follow each other around like sheep,on this and much most other subjects.It's fashionable to mock religion and to blame the worlds religions for all the current problems.I've heard all these anti-religion arguements a thousand times before and they're predictable as ever and just as ignorant.As my grandfather used to say being ignorant is the worse thing you can say of anyone!....

Atheism is hardly a fad, it has existed in Europe for centuries as a part of public intellectual discourse. At the very least one might say that modern Atheism (in its European form) has its roots in the Renaissance. Though in fact Atheists have a more ancient lineage than that even. Atheism has existed as a strong social and philosophical force ever since religion and belief in god reared its head we can be sure, the earliest known examples of atheistic schools of thought stretch back to Classical Antiquity and beyond.

Nor is Atheism confined to Europe, many ancient Indian Hindu philosophers readily rejected the notion of God and founded whole philosophical schools of thought based on a materialist understanding of reality in which god played no part and could not exist.

What single nameless individual human beings born in their millions and died without record have thought about the notion of god down the eons is also impossible to say, to imagine that every single one of them was convinced of the existence of god is absurd, because it ignores evidence that other opinions on the matter have in fact existed for as long as history was able to record them and that we simply do not know the minds of all these nameless ancestors.

No Atheism is definitely not a fad.

What I find particularly silly about Superbot's attribution of sheep-like behavior to atheists is that the vast majority of religious believers adhere to the religion in which they were brought up (notwithstanding switches from, say, one Protestant denomination to another), while most atheists were raised in some religion or other and came to reject its claims. In the United States, the percentage of the population identifying itself as atheist is a single-digit figure, which hardly suggests a "fad."

Pfffhahahaha. Being atheist doesn't mean absolute knowledge that there is no god. It's belief that there is no god. I admit I have no real evidence that there is no god, but there is no evidence for god either, so based on how I feel, I believe there is no god.

The reason there wont be any real outrage is because most people who call themselves atheist aren't over-reactive morons. And someone attacking my belief doesn't mean anything. Unlike other religions, when you attack that, you are attacking their mental crutch, at least in my opinion. Atheism is a luxury. It would be like if someone tried insulting for having a Lamborghini Miura. Ouch, I'm so hurt.

It's not even a belief that there is no god. "Belief" is too weak a word. I believe that when I get my ass out of bed in the morning and go to the kitchen, there will be enough milk for my cereal. But that doesn't mean that I will actually have enough milk. Atheism is a conclusion based on the evidence provided. Evidence suggests that there is no god, and so the conclusion is that there is no god. Until it is proven otherwise, the conclusion stands as the truth.

I can't help but feel a mild form of irritation reading some of the stuff in this thread.... MAYBE... JUST MAYBE God is beyond our little capabilities and our little methods of "evidence". Many people can't even wrap their minds around the concept of God, much less develop a way to prove the Almighty's existence, even the so called "Religious" ones. So the best most of us have is believing in God. But getting back to Atheist... being the limited beings that we are, it is very funny that Atheist think that they can discredit that there is a God in this never ending Universe. I'm willing to wager that such a powerful force doesn't require us to believe in its existence. It just is, and always will be, and it'll be this way after most of us are dead and gone, and nothing! Atheist, you're a speck in time, and the only everlasting thing about you is your Hubris. Only a real fool can look at ALL of creation and life itself, and conclude everything came from nothing with no Rhyme or reason, absent of any higher form of consciousness. EVERYTHING comes from something, even your ridiculous ability to write God off. P.S. I can almost have a little respect for people who simply don't believe in God and leave it at that, but for those of you who try to spread the word that their is no God and you actually try to recruit... It is people who genuinely believe on God that make the worst criminals in our time and history.

US prison statistics showed that over 90% of prisoners identified themselves as religious, while less than 1% identified themselves as atheist (the rest would have not specified / been other stuff like agnostic). Also mosst of the religious crimunals would find a way to believe that God was supporting whatever crimes they had carried out. It is almost always religion that leads to the oppresion of minorities - banning marriage for same sex people, and in the past for inter racial people. Its always religion hindering and getting in the way of scientific progress - astronomy, evolution, genetic engineering (for curing / eradicating genetic dsease), and stem cell research. Its always religion that sets up organized hate groups - Nazis, Taliban, Al Queda, Westborro Baptist Church. Its always religion displaying the grandest acts of pure stupidity and ignorance - the original article in this thread, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Fox News, Texas.

Yet everyone that doesnt believe in religion is forced to have to be respectful towards religion, and religion constantly gets away with playing the victim card, while they get a free ticket to openly abusing atheists and gays.

Telling me that many people don't share my "belief" isn't saying much, and it doesn't invalidate what I'm saying either. The majority might rule, but that doesn't actually mean they're right. I'm not going to let any testament tell me anything about God, because it makes the almighty out to be some vengeful Jealous God. Those are all Petty Human qualities and attributes we've assigned to a power above all that, so we can feel better about Crusades, and catholic inquisitions, all other "Religious wars", and telling people that they can't get married b/c they are another race, or b/c they are Gay. It's used as a means to control more than anything else. Have you noticed less and less People going to Church? There's a reason. The Bible has some important lessons, and things you really ought to think about, I particularly like psalms 23, and 91, but that's as far as it goes... helpful lessons in life. But you might want to consider that the Bible is more the word of man, than God.

No it doesn't contradict itself, you just can't understand. I wouldn't think the Bible is the word of GOD! It is clearly the word of MAN. You have a problem with separating Religion from God, and THAT is how they want many people, CONFUSED. The hateful things done by Christians aren't supported by God, but by themselves, arbitrarily. It's just that they tell everyone this is Gods will, and have even you believing that. And if you think those criminals actually believed in God... Perhaps after they got arrested and thrown in jail, they believed in God. It's always convenient that way, you know what I'm saying?
